Abstract:

William Chapin was born in Philadelphia in 1802 and his first career focused on publishing; in the 1830s Chapin published a gazetteer and map of the U.S. In 1840 Chapin got involved in education of the blind, first in Ohio and later in Philadelphia. During the late 1840s Chapin served as director of a women's teacher's college located in Geneva, N.Y.

These materials relate to Thompson's father-in-law, William Chapin, the director of the Geneva Female Institute and Normal School, a mid-19th century N.Y. teacher's college. The short holograph memoir reflects upon Chapin's work as director of the college and his life as an educator. Included are a printed Plan and Prospectus for the college and some newspaper clippings pasted into the pamphlet highlighting Chapin's career.
