Abstract:

During World War II, Marvin R. Halbert served in the United States Army Signal Corps as a fixed radio operator. After returning home, Halbert attended the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a BS in Economics and then a Juris Doctor. Halbert served for ten years as Assistant District Attorney for the City of Philadelphia, beginning with Mayor Richardson Dilworth. He practiced law in Philadelphia for ten years as a senior partner before his appointment as judge to the Court of Common Pleas for twenty-seven years until his retirement in 2001.

The Marvin R. Halbert World War II correspondence and other materials, 1943–1945, 1952, 1967, consists primarily of handwritten letters, postcards, V-mail, and telegrams sent by Halbert between 1943 and 1945 to his family living in Philadelphia. The correspondence dated 1943 is sent from the Army training facility in Crowder, Missouri, where Halbert was stationed for many months before being deployed to England in January 1944. In the communications sent to his family, Halbert relayed many details of his day to day life first regarding the specialized training he received as a fixed station radio operator in the Signal Corps and then as a young soldier stationed in Europe. His letters provide insight into his beliefs and values as a young Jewish man, his opinions of the U.S. armed forces and World War II, observations regarding personal relationships with family and friends, and what life on the home front was like. The collection also includes miscellaneous correspondence addressed to Halbert's mother, war ration books, and bumper stickers as well as newspaper clippings of articles about Marvin R. Halbert.

The correspondence is arranged in chronological order, with miscellaneous correspondence and newspaper clippings filed at the end.
