Overview and metadata sections

Methodism is a protestant Christian faith based in the teachings of John Wesley (1703-1791), who preached "practical divinity," emphasis on Christian living, and putting faith and love into action. The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1784 in Baltimore, Maryland with Francis Asbury and Thomas Coke as its first bishops and held its first general conference in 1792. In May of 1939, the Methodist Episcopal Church; the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; and the Methodist Protestant Church united to form the Methodist Church (U.S.). In 1946 the Church of the United Brethren in Christ (New constitution) and the Evangelical Church united to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church. In 1968 the Methodist Church (U.S.) and the Evangelical United Brethren Church united, forming the United Methodist Church (U.S.).

Trinity United Brethren Church in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania was formed in 1912 as a merger of Memorial Young People's Christian Union Church (United Brethren in Christ) in Reading, Otterbein Society of the Church of United Brethren in Christ in Reading, and Salem Society of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ in Sinking Spring. Trinity United Methodist Church was discontinued in 1993.

This collection consists of records from the Trinity United Brethren Church as well as materials from its three predecessor churches, Memorial, Otterbein, and Salem. Trinity United Brethren Church records include: marriages, 1913-1921, 1927-1953, 1953-1974; baptisms, 1913-1917, 1926-1953, 1953-1975; deaths, 1914-1921, 1926-1953, 1953-1987; Charge Conference records, circa 1945-1965; Quarterly Conference minutes, 1920-1947; Official Board Minutes, 1931-1956; and membership records, 1988-1993. There are membership and vital records from Memorial Young People's Christian Union Church (marriages, 1899-1903; baptisms, 1899-1903; deaths, 1900-1903; and membership, 1899-1907), Otterbein Society of the Church of United Brethren in Christ (marriages, 1908-1911; baptisms, 1904-1912; and deaths, 1904-1910), and Salem Society of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ (marriages, 1951; baptisms, 1935-1948; deaths, 1936-1957; and membership, late 1800s to 1950s). Additionally, the collection includes a small number of property-related documents. A folder-level inventory for the collection is available.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Historical Society of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church directly for more information.
