The Benjamin Rowland Myers Elementary School in Elkins Park, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania was established in 1923.

This collection consists of the records of Benjamin Rowland Myers Elementary School in Elkins Park, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, 1933-2004. The records include teachers' records of social studies assemblies and activity units and student and P. T. A. newsletters and other "publications."

The Assembly Programs reports, 1933-1935, 1939-1950, describe the programs and at times give complete transcripts. Some of the assemblies for the 1946/1947 school year were "How Plants Grow," "The Farm," "Desert Life in Africa," "Hobbies," a play based on the Middle Ages, and "The Chinese Willow Plate." Each year includes holiday programs.

The Activity Experiences record how the unit was initiated (often through the interests of the children), interesting features, English and literature needed, history needed, geography needed, science needed, and an appraisal of the value of the unit. Examples of projects from 1944-1952 are "On the Farm," “Our House," "First Grade Puppets," "Mysteries of the Interior of the Earth."

The "publications" are yearbooks, 1937, 1938, 1951, 1959-1961, 1994 (4th grade); student newspapers, 1957-1961; P. T. A. newsletters, 1959-1952, 1956-1957, 1959-1967, 1898, 1991, 2004. There are also items relating to the 1967 dedication of the new and renovated rooms and other miscellaneous material and clippings.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2011-2012 as part of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR), using data provided by the Old York Road Historical Society. The HCI-PSAR project was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was done in the HCI-PSAR project.
