Overview and metadata sections

The Rydal-Meadowbrook Civic Association was founded in 1948 to promote the interests of the residents in the Rydal and Meadowbrook sections of Abington Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. RMCA is the oldest incorporated civic association in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Most of the collection dates from the 1950s-1960s, and includes various administrative records such as: correspondence, membership lists, financial records, legal records, scattered minutes, constitution and by-laws, correspondence, and clippings. The collection also includes a segment of legal documents and correspondence, 2002-2005, concerning opposition to Philadelphia Presbytery Homes, Inc.'s plans for retirement home at Rydal Park, "The Fairways," and a new access road off Susquehanna Road. There are also some certificates and ephemera.

Gift of Rydal-Meadowbrook Civic Association, Charles Kahn, Jr., and Paul Aloe (accessions 2005.032, 2011.059, and 2012.031).

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Old York Road Historical Society directly for more information.
