Overview and metadata sections

Robert (Bob) Finnigan, a Mummers costume designer, has designed over 42 prize-winning costumes across multiple divisions in the Mummers Parade. He started designing costumes for the parade in 1960, and celebrated his 52nd consecutive year with the parade New Years day of 2012. Finnigan also served as curator for The Mummers Museum and was inducted into the String Band Hall of Fame in 2008.

The Mummers Parade is an annual New Year's Day event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Local clubs devise elaborate costumes, scenery, and routines for a march through the city streets that some consider the oldest folk festival in America.

This collection contains about 3-dozen framed sketches and numerous unframed sketches for Mummers' costumes designed by Robert H. Finnigan in the 1960s and 1970s.

Not all of the sketches are signed, and it is possible that a few costume designs by other artists were interfiled into this collection at some point.

Gift of Robert H. Finnigan, 1976-1978.
