Overview and metadata sections

Nordiska museet is Sweden's largest museum of cultural history. It was founded by Artur Hazelius (1833-1901), who had the idea to save traditional Swedish folk culture from the tides of industrialization in 1872. He debuted his "Skandinavisk-Etnografiska samlingen" [The Scandinavian Ethnography Collection] in 1873. The collection grew in the decades that followed, and the museum moved to its new building in 1907. As of 2012, in addition to the museum in Stockholm, Nordiska museet operates four castles and manors in other parts of Sweden.
