The American Institute of Chemists was founded in 1923 as an Economic Organization of Chemists. Over time, as other chemical industry trade associations took shape, the A.I.C. concentrated its energies more on questions of ethics, professional conduct and accreditation.

The first portion of the collection consists mainly of correspondence files labelled as either Special or General by the A.I.C. These files over an overview of the growth of the Institute from its founding in 1923 through to 1989. Remaining series are devoted to Minutes and Reports, Awards, Printed Matter Scrapbooks and fairly comprehensive Administrative Records covering the years 1989-2001.
Organized into eight series. Series 1. Correspondence, 1923-1990; Series 2. Minutes and Reports, 1923-1985; Series 3. Awards, 1934-1980; Series 4. Printed Matter 1923-2000; Series 5. Scrapbooks, 1932-1983; Series 6. Ohio Institute of Chemists 1971-1991; Series 7. Administrative Records, 1987-2001; Series 8. Computer Software 1998.
This is a collection of correspondence and documents generated by the American Institute of Chemists. The earlier years are presented more as an overview while the years 1970 through 2001 are covered in greater detail.
E. Gerald Meyer (then-President, A.I.C.) arranged for these records to be transferred to CHF.
