Abstract:

Copy of a presentation given at the American Rocket Society 14th Annual Meeting.

The American Rocket Society (ARS) was founded in 1930. Originally called the American Interplanetary Society, its name was changed in 1934 to reflect the growing seriousness of the society's aims and programs, which included the testing of various types of liquid-fueled rockets. The organization grew rapidly as the U.S. government became more interested in rocketry and by 1959 it had a membership of 21,000. In 1963 the ARS merged with the Institute of Aerospace Sciences. The new organization was called the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

This is a 31-page Xeroxed copy of a presentation originally given at the ARS 14th Annual Meeting held in Washington, D.C. from November 16 through November 20, 1959. The presentation is a description of a Stirling-type engine designed for possible use in space travel. It was co-authored by H.W. Welsh, E.J. Poste and R.B. Wright, all employees of the Allison Division of General Motors Corporation.
