Tamiya was a leading postwar Japanese scientist specializing in Plant Physiology. At the time of the creation of these sketches, he was employed as a Native Guide to two successive committees of top American scientists sent to Japan under NAS auspices on combined goodwill and fact-finding visits.

This a sketchbook created by Hiroshi Tamiya the Japanese plant biochemist. Eighteen pages of the book are used, Fourteen contain artwork, the remainder are messages to the artist.

The book was a gift of Dr. Andrew Benson, UC San Diego, who authored the NAS Biographical Memoir of Hiroshi Tamiya.
