Overview and metadata sections

Uwchlan Monthly Meeting was established in 1763 by Chester [Concord] Quarterly Meeting out of Goshen Monthly Meeting. In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches.

Uwchlan Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) merged with Bradford Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1883 to form Bradford & Uwchlan Monthly Meeting. This meeting was discontinued in 1901.

Uwchlan Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) removed to Downingtown from Lionville in 1900. This meeting was the forerunner of the current Uwchlan Monthly Meeting.

Includes: pre-Separation and Orthodox minutes, 1763-1852, and women's minutes, 1763-1882; Orthodox ministers & elders' minutes, 1782-1914; Orthodox burials (Downingtown, Pa.), 1813-1887; manumissions, 1775-1784.

Biographical / Historical

At the time of the Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1827-28, pre-Separation vital records were generally retained by the branch with which the recorder was affiliated. Researchers are advised to consider vital records which span this period carefully: in many cases, the meeting without the original records may have reconstructed these records for its membership only, giving the impression that individuals in the other branch were never members.

Biographical / Historical

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.

Ministry and Counsel committees were established in 1918 by Hicksite meetings, which no longer designated members as ministers or elders.
