Overview and metadata sections
A meeting for worship at Rahway was established in 1742 by Woodbridge [Rahway and Plainfieled] Monthly Meeting. A preparative meeting was established in 1761. In 1769, Woodbridge Preparative Meeting removed to Rahway and was probably absorbed by Rahway Preparative Meeting at that time. The Orthodox preparative meeting and meeting for worship were discontinued in 1910; their members were transferred to Trenton Preparative Meeting of Chesterfield Monthly Meeting (Orthodox). Rahway Preparative Meeting (Hicksite) merged with Shrewsbury Preparative Meeting to form Shrewsbury and Rahway Preparative Meeting in 1888. The preparative meeting was discontinued circa 1889.
Records of Rahway Preparative Meeting (Orthodox), include: minutes, 1852-1910; women's minutes, 1838-1908; financial records, 1828-1897; school committee minutes, 1875-1888.

Collection Inventory
Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.
