Overview and metadata sections

Chestnut Hill Monthly Meeting was established in 1933 as a united meeting by Abington Quarterly Meeting (Orthodox) and Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting (Hicksite). The meeting became a part of Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting in 1955.

Chestnut Hill is currently an active monthly meeting.

Records of Chestnut Hill Monthly Meeting, 1932-2007, include: burials chart; marriage certificates, 1941-2000; memberships, removals, transfer, 1934-90s; joint minutes, 1932-2019 (2012-2016 unprocessed); ministers and elders minutes, 1940-1942, 1953-1973; overseers minutes, 1959-1973.

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting.

Biographical / Historical

Committee which had care of the spiritual welfare of the meeting, particularly the meeting for worship. Ministry and Counsel committees were established in 1918 by Hicksite meetings, which no longer designated members as ministers or elders. The predecessor of Ministry and Counsel was the Preparative Meeting of Ministers and Elders.
