This is a finding aid. It is a description of archival material held at the Quaker Meeting Records at Haverford College Quaker & Special Collections and Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described below are physically available in their reading room, and not digitally available through the web.

Overview and metadata sections

Abington Monthly Meeting was established in 1683 by Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting as a monthly meeting for the meetings for worship at Tacony (Frankford) and Poetquesink or Poquessing (Byberry). From 1687 to 1710, this meeting was known as "Dublin". It was transferred to Abington Quarterly Meeting in 1786. At the time of the Hicksite Separation of 1827, two branches of this monthly meeting emerged. The Orthodox branch removed to Cheltenham in 1920 and was renamed "Cheltenham Monthly Meeting" in 1944. Cheltenham is currently an active monthly meeting. The Hicksite monthly meeting, which reunited with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox)in 1955, is the forerunner of the current Abington Monthly Meeting.

Records of Abington Monthly Meeting and its predecessors since 1670.

Included of the Pre-Separation and Hicksite records: minutes of the men's meeting and later, of joint sessions with women; minutes of the women's meeting; registers of births and deaths; marriage and membership records through the present day; certificates of removal, disownments, etc.; epistles received and other miscellaneous papers. Business minutes from 2018-2023 were deposited digitally.

The records of the Orthodox branch of Abington Monthly Meeting (later renamed Cheltenham Monthly Meeting) are described in the records of Cheltenham Monthly Meeting.

Deposit

The records of Abington Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) and its successor, Cheltenham Monthly Meeting, have been described in a separate finding aid (QM-Ph-C469). The early records of the pre-Separation Meeting of Ministers and Elders are described in that finding aid because the volumes were continued by the Orthodox branch.

Collection Inventory

Biographical / Historical

At the time of the Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1827-28, pre-Separation vital records were generally retained by the branch with which the recorder was affiliated. Researchers are advised to consider vital records which span this period carefully: in many cases, the meeting without the original records may have reconstructed these records for its membership only, giving the impression that individuals in the other branch were never members.

Three additional membership lists and a statistical summary of membership, 1862 are laid in. Arrangement is alphabetical within the following categories: males over 21 years; females over 18 years; males under 21 years; females under 18 years (as they were on the 24th of 9mo 1827).

Biographical / Historical

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.

In 2016, Abington Friends Meeting held an "Unveiling & Dedication Ceremony" to commemorate "the long-forgotten people of African descent interred in our burial ground."

The file includes the event program (which includes "researched and recently discovered" names of Black people buried at Abington Meeting), a guest book from the event, some clippings related to news coverage, clerk's remarks and report, and a scrapbook of photographs and other material related to the large public program.
