Martin Niemöller; prominent Lutheran pastor who, although at first a supporter of Hitler, became his outspoken public foe; Niemöller spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps, despite his ardent German nationalism. By the mid-1950s, Niemöller had become a pacifist. He worked with a number of international groups, including the World Council of Churches, for international peace and nuclear disarmament.
