Overview and metadata sections

The American Faculty Council for the Gradualist Way to Peace was formed and organized in 1962 by Amitai Etzioni, Associate Professor of Sociology at Columbia. The council was a reaction to "the polarization of debate on the question of support for either the arms race or unilateral disarmament. Both approaches are likely to lead to disaster." Further, the council sought "to enlist the massive American center, avoiding both the left and the right." Each member was free to advocate their own strategy as long as it fell within the limits of "seeking alternatives to arms in the protection of peace and freedom."

Based in New York City.

The Swarthmore College Peace Collection is not the official repository for the records of this organization.
