Murphy, Walter F., 1929-2010

Walter Murphy, a political scientist and constitutional scholar, served as the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University. Born on Nov. 21, 1929, and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Murphy was an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame, George Washington University, and the University of Chicago. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross, the Purple Heart, a Presidential Unit Citation and three battle stars. Murphy joined the Princeton faculty as an assistant professor of politics in 1958. He was named the McCormick Professor in 1968 and retained that chair until his retirement with emeritus status in 1995. He remained in the Marine Corps Reserve, retiring in 1974 as a colonel.

This collection includes the records of Murphy's academic and literary work, including syllabi, research materials related to his novel The Vicar of Christ, correspondence, and subject files.

The order in which these materials came to Princeton has been maintained. Materials were pulled from filing cabinets and binders in Walter Murphy's office by Dan Linke in March of 2013.

Gift of Doris Murphy in 2013. The accession number associated with this gift is ML.2013.011.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Records were shipped to the Mudd Library by Doris Murphy and Dan Linke in March 2013. A preliminary file list and collection-level finding aid was created by Maureen Callahan in May 2013.

File-level selection was conducted by Dan Linke, curator of Public Policy papers, at Walter Murphy's home office before materials came to the Mudd Library.
