Margaret DeBardeleben Tutwiler was born on December 28,1950 in Birmingham, Alabama. Tutwiler earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1973. From July 1975 to July 1976, she assumed the job of Executive Director of Gerald Ford's Committee for Alabama. She became Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs and Public Liaison for the United States Department of the Treasury from 1985 through 1988. From November 1988 to January 1989, she was senior advisor for the transition team of the U.S. Department of State. Tutwiler served briefly as consultant for the Department of State before she was promoted in March 1989 to Assistant Secretary of State and spokesperson for the United States Department of State. In March 2001, President George W. Bush nominated Margaret Tutwiler to be U.S. Ambassador to Morocco. She served in this role until 2003, when she became Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy. She had been the Executive Vice President for Communications and Government Relations at the New York Stock Exchange from 2004 through 2007, at which time she became head of Global Communications and Public Affairs at Merrill Lynch.
These diaries, kept between 1989 and 1992, document Margaret Tutwiler's tenure as State Department Spokesman and Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs under Secretary of State James Baker. Tutwiler redacted personal information from her diaries before sending them to the Mudd Manuscript Library.

All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor.
