Overview and metadata sections

Dulles, Allen Macy

Allen Macy Dulles, son of Clover Todd and Allen Welsh Dulles, was a student of history and politics with plans for a career in public service until he sustained a serious injury in the Korean War. Dulles (born in 1930) graduated from Princeton University with a bachelors degree in History in 1951, having spent his senior year studying in England at Oxford University. He entered the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant and a platoon leader and was sent to Korea. On November 15, 1952, Dulles suffered a massive head injury from mortar fire. He spent years in recovery at hospitals and medical facilities in the United States and in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. He returned to the United States in the early 1970s, settling near family in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The collection consists of correspondence between family members prior to and following Allen Macy Dulles' injury as a Marine lieutenant in the Korean War. Prior to the injury, the correspondence documents Dulles's education and activities at primary school, Phillips Exeter Academy, Princeton University and Oxford University. Following the injury, materials include correspondence to and from Allen Macy Dulles, professional and personal correspondence of Allen Welsh Dulles and the Dulles family, correspondence with doctors regarding Dulles' physical condition, and military records including a citation for the Silver Star Medal which Dulles earned for his wartime leadership and bravery.
