Overview and metadata sections
Marten Van Heuven (1932- ) led a career in the United States foreign service, serving in several European countries, which culminated with his service as National Intelligence Officer for Europe from 1987 to 1991, a position responsible for the analysis of European and Canadian issues. Following his retirement in 1991, Van Heuven has been a senior consultant at RAND, a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and a distinguished lecturer at the State Department's National Foreign Affairs Training Center. During his career, Van Heuven has developed expertise in many areas, including United States-European relations, NATO, European politics and security, arms control, and the United Nations.
Van Heuven's papers document his career in the United States foreign service and at RAND, and include his speech files, writings files, and correspondence. The speech and writing files (1970-2008) cover topics including United States foreign relations with European countries, political events and history of European countries, global governance, military intelligence, and NATO. The correspondence files (1991-2005) originate from his work at RAND and include his correspondence with government and military officials and scholars regarding his papers, speeches, and ideas about world affairs. Also included is a small amount of biographical information.
The order in which these materials came to Princeton has been maintained.

All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
No information about the physical processing of this collection is available. An initial collection-level description and finding aid were created by Adriane Hanson in 2008 and a file-level inventory was created by Tal Eisenzweig at this time. The finding aid was updated when materials from subsequent accruals in 2009-2014 were added to the collection.
