Overview and metadata sections
Charles Willis Thompson was a Washington correspondent, book reviewer, and editor of the New York Times (1899-1921) and, later, a writer in Philadelphia for the Public Ledger (1921-1922) and Commonweal (1930-1931).
Consists of selected papers of Thompson, including 27 scrapbooks of clippings (1884-1941) of his columns and articles written while he was a Washington correspondent, book reviewer, and editor of the New York Times (1899-1921) and, later, a writer in Philadelphia for the Public Ledger (1921-1922) and Commonweal (1930-1931). Also included are 11 volumes called "The Archives" containing papers read before the Beecher Literary and Debating Society (1887-1910) in Brooklyn and a history of the club (1887-1907) compiled and edited by Thompson with the assistance of Reuben A. Bull. In addtion there is family and personal correspondence (1881-1948), as well as bound volumes of family memorabilia, poems, and correspondence, and a small section of articles, book reviews, poems, and loose clippings. Miscellaneous items include printed matter, notes, galleys for The Godlike Daniel (1930) by Samuel Hopkins Adams, and poems by Frances Mathilda Ford.
Materials in this collection are arranged into four series.

Collection Inventory
Series 1 exists of family and personal correspondence, including correspondence and related papers that Thompson seems to have designated for his "Curio" volumes of family correspondence and memorabilia (see Series 4).
The series is arranged into chronological files (some of which Thompson labeled "Curio") and alphabetical files, of which only those for Miss Lamprey and J. Nigel are Thompson's original files.

Series 3 includes bound volumes of "The Archives," comprised of typescript writings of Charles William Thompson and others for the Beecher Literary Club and Debating Society of the Plymouth Sunday School, Brooklyn, New York, including a "Special Edition" about the history of the club.

Series 4 includes an auto-biographical sketch, miscellaneous photographs, and several bound volumes of "Curio," "A Book of Souvenirs, Half Journal and Half 'Memory-Book,' begun by Charles Willis Thompson in 1892, including poems and other writings by family members and others as well as diary fragments.
The photographs are not arranged in any particular order. The volumes of "Curio," which are not complete, are arranged by volume number.
