This is a finding aid. It is a description of archival material held at the Princeton University Library: Manuscripts Division. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described below are physically available in their reading room, and not digitally available through the web.

Overview and metadata sections

Consists of an unpublished archive pertinent to Tsaldari's activities as Commander-in-Chief of Crete, Greece during the years 1921-1922. It comprises mainly correspondence, incoming and outgoing, official and personal documents, the political movements of the time, Anti-Venizelist activity, telegrams, receipts and generally everything he sent or received during his tenure in Crete.

Acquired with matching funds provided by the Program in Hellenic Studies with the support of the Stanley J. Seeger Hellenic Fund. (AM 2024-030)

Consists of incoming letters from several politicians, local officials and many other individuals to Kōnstantinos Tsaldarēs, including the prefects of the cities of Rethymnon and Ērakleion; the mayor of Ērakleion; N. Hēsychakēs; Geōrgios Sp. Merkourēs; Meimarakēs; Markos Katzourakēs; Michaēl K. Spakianakēs; the Minister of Interior; and the Minister of Transportation.

Scope and Contents

Consists of a letter from Kōnstantinos Tsaldarēs to G. Papadopetros; the rest of the correspondence comprises incoming letters from several public officials, journalists and Tsaldarēs' acquainteds, including I. Andritsos; a letter from the imprisoned at that time Iōannēs D. Mourelos, editor of the newspaper "Nea Ephemeris" in Ērakleion; Timotheos, the metropolitan of Rethymno; Ai. G. Kartalēs (?); Markos Mantakas; Nikos Kitsikēs; a letter from the physician Iosēph Betouras to Dēmētrios Gounarēs; the Minister of Transportation; the prefect of Ērakleion; the Mayor of Chania, Crete; and the newspaper "Nea Ereuna, Ephēmeris Politikē."

Consists of a handwritten draft of a talk entitled "Krētē" signed by K. Tsaldarēs. Included also is a typescript of a speech addressed to the people of Patras, Greece most likely prepared and delivered by Tsaldarēs, as well.

Scope and Contents

Consists of correspondence, reports, and copies of telegrams regarding political movements from the supporters of Venizelos; a copy of a typescript report from the colonel Zigras; copy of an encrypted telegram regarding a movement of Venizelists on the catalysis of authorities and declaration of Crete as an independent state; draft law on Transportation Fund in Crete; census for Crete; staff directory of public constructions in Crete; Tsaldarēs' personal documents, including bank accounts, communication with the philanthropic organizations (Φιλανθρωπική Αδελφότις Ο Σωτήρ"; official letters from associations in Crete; a typescript of a document sent by the Commander in Chief of Crete to all monastic and parish committees regarding the sale of their estates; and a typescript of a report about an encounter with casualties in Chania.

Also, included is an inventory of the furniture of Tsaldarēs' house; a general list of income and expenses of Crete for the fiscal years 1915-1918; and receipts of compensations to agronomists in Chania.

Consists of a memorandum of the "Λαϊκός Πολιτικός Σύλλογος Ηρακλείου" to Dēmētrios Gounarēs, Leader of the Populist Party of Nationalists; a memorandum regarding the situation in Crete; another confidential one to Tsaldarēs regarding the situation in the prefecture of Chania.
