Overview and metadata sections
Princeton University's Department of Near Eastern Studies has been a leader in the study of the Middle East since 1927 when it was founded as the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures. While traditionally the strength of the department has been in the medieval and pre-modern studies of the geographical area that includes the Arab lands, Iran, Israel, and Turkey, greater emphasis has been given more recently to the modern Muslim world in its entirety, including the Caucasus, Central Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
Consists of research materials of faculty members of Princeton University's Department of Near Eastern Studies, most likely Philip Khuri Hitti (1886-1978) who served as department chair from 1926 to 1954, and/or his son-in-law, R. Bayly Winder (1920-1988)(M.A. and Ph.D from Princeton), who taught at Princeton in the same department until the early 1960s. Two main file groups include photocopied materials relating to Jurji Zaydan (Georgie Zeidan) (1861-1914), mostly professional and personal correspondence, and Aramco records, primarily Arabian Research Division, Government Relations Division, translations of Current Affairs Radio Broadcasts.
