This is a finding aid. It is a description of archival material held at the Princeton University Library: Manuscripts Division. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described below are physically available in their reading room, and not digitally available through the web.
Overview and metadata sections
The collection consists of retained copies of notarial documents -- land transfers, wills, inventories of possessions, sales of houses, and depositions related to estate/inheritance matters -- for transactions in what is now the state of New Mexico. There are 66 documents, on paper, in Spanish and English (of the atter, there is only one), bearing such place-names as Río Arriba, Las Truchas, Santa Fe, El Embudo, and others in New Mexico. The lack of notaries explains the absence of legal orthography in these documents, and none bears legal stamps. Several documents show women (as wives and daughters and as their own persons) owning personal property, whether that might be several plots of land or a herd of goats, and one document (#36) mentions visiting Apache Indians. Folio and smaller, approx. 81 pp. total.
Organized chronologically.
Assembled in the nineteenth century by collector LeBaron Bradford Prince (Governor of New Mexico Territory, 1889–93). Probably in the inventory of the Denver book dealer Rosenstock in the 1950s or 1960s. Acquired by private collector Weldon Paul Zundel of Golden, Colorado. Given or sold to an unidentified university. Deaccessioned and sold to dealer in 2010.

No. 1: Martín, Juan Francisco. Document. San Antonio del Puesto del Embudo, 22 November 1777. Folio (30.5 x 21.2 cm). [3] pp. Martín, a citizen of Nuestra Señora de la Saleda (sic) del Río Arriba, appeared before Cristobal Vegil the alcalde mayor and "capitan de guerra" of the jurisdiction of Villa Nueva de Santa Cruz de la Cañada, and sells his brother Salvador Martín the ranch Juan Francisco inherited from his late father. The extent of the land, its boundaries, etc. are specified. Martín did not sign. The document is in the hand of and is signed by Vegil, with the signatures of Manuel García and Juan Miguel as witnesses. Vegil states that there are no notaries in New Mexico and so it falls to him to pen such documents. Witnesses: Manuel García, Juan Miguel de Atensio.

No. 2: Lobato, Baltasar. Document. No place [New Mexico], 4 December 1801. (10.5 x 15.5 cm). Lobato gives his power of attorney to Gregorio Luzero to carry out a transfer for land that Lobato sold to Luzero in Los Barrancos Blancos and for which he received 40 pesos. The document is in the hand of Francisco Lucero who wrote it out at Lobato's request.
No. 3: Varela, Juan Isidro. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 1802. (21 x 16 cm). [1] p. Varela pledges as surety (for what is not specified) 100 varas of land he owns in Los Ríos. Witnesses: Juan Angel de Realpando, Juan de Jesús Maese.
No. 4: Luján, Francisco. A.D.S. El Embudo, 20 December (no year, ca. 1805). (10 x 14.7 cm). [1] p. Antonio Medina, Juan Ambrosio Ribaldi, and José María Mease appeared before the "teniente" Francisco Luján and said that Antonio Medina sold a two-story house to Juan Ambrosio Ribaldi with all the usual rights, and Juan Ambrosio Ribaldi said he sold that same house to José María Mease. Witness: Tibursio Martín (who signed). [Ascribed date based on handwriting and wording of document.]
No. 5: García de la Mora, Manuel. Document. El Embudo, 22 April 1807. (25 x 19.4 cm). [1] p. A copy made 1831 of the original document. García de la Mora was a "juez receptor," a captain in the militia, and the then alcalde of Embudo. He partitions a parcel of land inherited by the eleven children of the late Francisco Martín. The location, size, and boundaries of the land are detailed. All of the children are specifically named.
No. 6: Real Alencaster, Joaquín del. L.S. to the Alcalde of La Cañada. Santa Fe, 15 July 1807. 4to (20.2 x 19.3 cm). [1] p. The provincial governor orders all alcaldes of New Mexico to send certain documents to Santa Fe and to ensure their safe arrival "as before."
No. 64: García de la Mora, Manuel. A.D.S. Río Arriba, 6 December 1807. (31.5 x 21.5 cm). [1] p. García de la Mora identifies himself as the alcalde mayor of Santa Cruz de la Cañada (a change since document #5, above), and here says that Baltazar Lobato and Gregorio Luzero have appeared before him and Lobato transferred ownership of a piece of land measuring 55 varas to Luzero for the sum of 40 pesos. Witness: Juan García.
No. 65: Luzero, Gregorio. A.D.S. No place [La Cañada?], 24 April 1808. (31.5 x 21.5 cm). [1/4] p. Luzero transfers ownership of the piece of land measuring 55 varas he acquired on 6 December 1807 to "Martín" (first name not given). No price is given. Witness: Antonio González (who did not sign). [On the verso of García de la Mora, Manuel. A.D.S. Río Arriba, 6 December 1807.]
No. 66: García, Manuel. A.D.S. No place [La Cañada ?], 10 July 1808. (31.5 x 21.5 cm). [1/4] p. García identifies himself as the alcalde mayor (but not of what town) and here ratifies Gregorio Luzero's land transfer document of 24 April 1808. Witness: Juan García, who signed. [On the verso of García de la Mora, Manuel. A.D.S. Río Arriba, 6 December 1807.]
No. 7: Mes, José. Document. Río Arriba, 16 May 1809. Folio (31 x 21.5 cm). [2] pp. Mes appeared before Manuel García, alcalde mayor of Santa Cruz de la Cañada, and on behalf of himself and his wife sold 50 varas of land ("tierra de labor") that the wife had inherited from her father. The purchaser was Francisco Martín. The exact location of the land and its boundaries are given. The agreement specifies that an additional 80 varas are also included. Mes did not sign, but the alcalde and witnesses (José Miguel Trujillo, Francisco Luján) do so on his behalf.

No. 8: Luján, Francisco. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], no date [1 March 1810]. (15.5 x 9.5 cm). [½] p. Luján promises to give Bautista Chalifre (??) 10 costales of maiz. [On the same piece of paper as #9.]
No. 9: Lucero, Francisco. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 2 March 1810. (15.5 x 9.5 cm). [½] p. Lucero acknowledges having received 10 costales of maiz on the account of his "hijo politico" from the first harvest that Fr. José de Jesús Luján sold him. [On the same piece of paper as #8.]
No. 10: González, Fray Juan Bruno. A.D.S. No place [El Embudo ?], 19 January 1817. (7 x 10.5 cm). [1] p. The priest pens a receipt for an unspecified amount of alms given so he will say a mass to Nuestra Señora del Refugio on behalf of María Isabel, a citizen of El Embudo.
No. 11: Vegil [sic], Juan. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 29 October 1814. (8.2 x 10.9 cm). [1] p. Receipt for 7 pesos received from Cristóbal Varela on the account of Francisco Martín of El Embudo.
No. 12: Brito, [no first name]. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], no date or month, 1817. (10.6 x 7.6 cm]. [1] p. Brito makes a list of possessions belonging to Antonio Francisco Martínez ("efectos que lleva afuera"): "33 unidades sábana blanca, 1 colcha negra, 4 pares de medias grande y tres chicas, dos sarapes, 1 peso y 7 pesos en reales" with later additions to the list of "un frontal negro con su avío de salon" and "1 peso de Miguel Antonio y otro de Joseph Christobal Madrid."
No. 13: Martín[ez?], José Antonio. A.D.S. El Punto de Lo de Mora, 14 October 1819. (9 x 15 cm). [1] p. Martín[ez?], a citizen of "el bosque grande, jurisdiccion de San Juan de los Cavayerso [i.e., Caballeros]," is currently the comandante of the militia that for the last 25 days has been encamped on "el rio del coyote en Lo de Mora." Among his men is Encarnacion [???]rgio who has completed his service obligation and so Martín[ez?] gives him this as his liberty from service so he may return to Trujillo.
No. 14: Martínez, Salvador. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 6 December 1819. (7.5 x 10.8 cm). [1] p. Martínez acknowledges having sold to Francico Antonio Martínez 40 varas of land and having received 30 of the 40 pesos of the agreed sale price, with 10 pesos remaining to be paid.
No. 15: Martínez, Salvador. A.D. No place [New Mexico], after 6 December 1819. (7.5 x 10.8 cm). [1] p. Martínez adds to the document of 6 December 1819 by writing on the other side that he has received in lieu of the 10 pesos one fanega of wheat and one pound of chile.

No. 16: Dimas, Jose Antonio. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 17 April 1820. (10.2 x 16 cm). [1] p. Dimas gives a receipt to Francisco Martín[ez?] for 40 fanegas of grain ("grano").
No. 17: Maese [Mes?], José Antonio. Document. No place [New Mexico], 8 May 1821. (6 x 14.2 cm). [1] p. Receipt for one and a half fanegas of wheat received from Francisco Martín [sic] from the wheat belonging to Lt. Valenzuela. Maese did not sign and asked the witness José Francisco Lucero do to so for him. [#18 written on the other side of the leaf bearing this document.]
No. 18: Mes [Maese?], José Antonio. Document. No place [New Mexico], 3 June 1821. (6 x 14.2 cm). [1] p. Receipt for three fanegas of wheat received from Francisco Martínez from the wheat belonging Lt. Valenzuela. Mes did not sign and asked the witness Francisco Griego do to so for him. [#17 written on the other side of the leaf bearing this document.]
No. 19: Mata, José Gabriel. A.L.S. to Francisco Martín. Joya, 3 [June] 1821. (7.5 x 8.5 cm). [1] p. Tells Martín to give to Mata's servant five fanegas of wheat from the quantity he is holding on behalf of Lt. Valenzuela. Further, he is to tell José Antonio Maes [sic, i.e., Mes (?)] to accompany the servant. [#20 written on the other side of the leaf bearing this document.]
No. 20: Romero, Isidro. Document. No place, 5 June 1821. (7.5 x 8.5 cm). [1] p. Receipt for the five fanegas of wheat. Romero did not sign because he did not know how. Signed, with a rubric, on his behalf by José Ramón Beira. [#19 written on the other side of the leaf bearing this document.]
No. 21: Ortiz, Matias. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 10 July 1821. (14.5 x 20.1 cm). [1] p. Ortiz, a captain in the Urban Militia in New Mexico and the then-current Commandant of Arms, promotes Francisco Martínez to the rank of sergeant.
No. 22: González, Eulolio. A.D.S. San Pablo, 17 January 1828. (11 x 15.8 cm). [2] pp. González gives his power of attorney to Francisco Martínez in order to collect a horse from Manuel, a citizen of Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Manuel was supposed to give the horse to Martínez on behalf of González but never did. Also still owing to González are some rebozos, a doublet, socks, etc.
No. 23: Unknown. Letter to Francisco Luján. No place [New Mexico], no date [ca. 1824/1825]. (8 x 10.5 cm). [1] p. The writer tells Luján that he is in need of more animals ("hostios" ?) like the ones he sent in August. Letter is incomplete, the lower, last, portion of the missive having been torn away. [#24 is written on the other side of the leaf bearing this document.]
No. 24 Maese, José Antonio. Document. No place [New Mexico], 13 June 1825. (8 x 10.5 cm). [1] p. Maese acknowledges having received three fanegas of wheat from Francisco Martín, the wheat coming from Lt. Valenzuela's account, the money due for the wheat having been paid by "Padre Sanchez." Since this document is complete and fills the space of the "page" completely, and the other document on the other side is incomplete, it seems logical that this document was written after the letter above. [#23 is written on the other side of the leaf bearing this document.]

No. 25: Martín, Francisco. Document. El Embudo, 4 August 1831. (7 x 19.4 cm). [1] p. Martín says he had the document relating to the partition of his father's land copied by José Ignacio Cruz [see #5 above].
No. 26: Jaramillo, José Vicente. A.D.S. Ojo Caliente, 8 July 1832. (6.5 x 19.8 cm). [2] pp. Jaramillo, the alcalde of Ojo Caliente, orders an unidentified individual to appear on the 16th and to bring the required papers with him relating to the lands that "Seferino is claiming."
No. 27: Unknown. Document. No place [New Mexico], 11 August 1832. (6.5 x 19.8 cm). [1/5] p. Acknowledges having received the 8 July summons issued by José Jaramillo. Witnessed by Juan Antonio Borigo and Francisco Luján. [Written on the same sheet as the summons proper.]
No. 28: Archuleta, Antonio Cayetano. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 20 March 1833. (10 x 12.5 cm). [1] p. Archuleta promises to pay Francisco Martín[ez?] 11 bottles of aguardiente.
No. 29: Santa Cruz, [???]. A.D.S. Santa Barbara, 27 May 1836. (10 x 20.2 cm). [1] p. Santa Cruz orders Cayetano Archuleta to appear in the ayuntamiento the next day without fail. [Written on the other side of the leaf bearing #31.]
No. 30: Archuelta, Juan Andrés. L.S. to Francisco Martín. San Juan, 12 November 1836. (20.6 x 14.6 cm). [2] pp. Archuleta, the president of the ayuntamiento of San Juan, orders Martín, a regidor, to appear the next day (Sunday, the 13th) and bring with him all fines he has collected, and the accounting of fines collected by alcaldes and majordomos.
No. 31: Espinosa, José Rafael. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 6 March 1837. (10 x 20.2 cm). [1] p. Espinosa contracts to work for Francisco Martín for two months, each month having only 25 days, in whatever work Martín may need. He also acknowledges owing Martín one and a half fanegas of green vegetables, and an equal amount of wheat. [Written on the other side of the leaf bearing #29.]
No. 32: Archuleta, Antonio Cayetano. A.D. No place [New Mexico], 9 July 1839 (10 x 12.5 cm). [1] p. An incomplete document on the other side of document #28. Missing text along the right hand side. Appears to be an acknowledgment of the 1833 obligation (i.e., document #28).

No. 33: Sena, Josefa. A.L.S. to Francisco Luján. Santa Fe, 24 February 1841. (12 x 9.5 cm). [2] pp., and integral address leaf. Sena writes to her nephew Luján in El Embudo saying there is nothing new as to family news. She further writes that she is sending his female cousin to keep Juanita company for a while.
No. 34: Martín, Francisco. D.S. Embudo, 13 October 1841. Folio (31.3 x 19.4 cm). 2.5 pp. Martín has had an accident and is ill and fears he is dying and here declares his last will and itemizes his land holdings and other possessions. His wife is María Ramona Archuleta and the sole child (apparently) is María Miguela Martín, but his wife is pregnant and if the child is safely born Martín declares it will be his legitimate child. His list of land holdings and other property shows he was rather well off. Witnesses: José Esquivel, P----seno Lora (?).
No. 35: Luján, Francisco. A.D.S. No place [Embudo?], 15 March 1842. (16 x 19.8 cm). [1] p. Luján, a citizen of Embudo, says he has given his "hermano político" Francisco Martínez, also a citizen of Embudo, 25 varas of his land in "la Junta de los Ríos." He gives the boundaries and says this is done with his son's permission.
No. 36: Ortega, Felix. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 25 October 1842. (21.5 x 15.7 cm). [1] p. Ortega acknowledges owing Antonio Francisco Martín[ez?] an unspecified sum of money for 12 pounds of lead and a "sarape de labor." He has owed the money for two years and promises to pay upon returning from a trip he is making "to the Apaches." Witness: José Esquivel.
No. 37: [Martín{ez ?}, Antonio Francisco?]. Document. No place [New Mexico], 1842. (21.5 x 15.7 cm). [1] p. A list of things contained in six "bundles" that his agent is taking "para tierra afuera." Includes various types of serapes ("atilmados" and "corientes" [sic]), chamoises, and pig skins. [Written on the other side of #36.]
No. 38: Luján, Francisco [the younger]. D.S. Los Luceros, 9 December 1844. Folio (32.5 x 21.8 cm). [2] pp. Luján acting for himself and his father (Francisco, the elder) appears before the Justice of the Peace of Luceros, jurisdiction of San Juan de los Caballeros, and transfers ownership of a house near Los Ríos to Francisco Martín, with certain restrictions as detailed in the document. The location and measurements of the land are given. Witnesses: Juan Pablo Gallero, José Quentana [sic], Agustín Luzero, Juan Medina, Diego Luzero.
No. 39: Anonymous. Document. No place [New Mexico], no date [ca. 1845 (based on hand)]. (12.5 x 8.1 cm). [1] p. List of men and money but whether a payroll or a list of debts is unclear: "Manuel Cortés, 1 peso en grano," for example.
No. 40: Martín[ez?], Francisco. A.D.S. San Antonio del Embudo, 21 March 1847. (7.2 x 9.8 cm). [1] p. Martín[ez?] writes that José Benizo de Atochi Martín was born on 15 March [1847] and was baptized by Presb. Fernando Ortiz on the 21st of the same month. The godparents were Pablo Valdez and María Concepción Luzero.
No. 41: Martín[ez?], Francisco. D.S. Río Arriba, 8 June 1847. (32.5 x 21 cm). 2 pp. Martín[ez?] appears with his wife, citizens of El Embudo, before Vivian Cisneros, the alcalde of the county of Río Arriba, and gives his wife his power of attorney to divide his estate should he die before her. She is to pay for his funeral and all legal debts and then divide the lands and other property in two halves: one for her, the other for the children. She is to administer the children's half until they reach maturity. Witnesses: José Ramón García, Marcos Jimenez.
No. 42: Luzero, José María. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 1847. (24.8 x 19.7 cm). [2] pp. Accounting of monies paid on behalf of Francicito Martín and Miguel Romero.
No. 43: Jaramío, José Vicente. A.L.S. to the Alcalde of Ojo Caliente. No place, 28 February 1848. (19.7 x 12.6 cm). [2] pp. Concerns settlement of a debt with the resolution being that the debtor will give him six "sarapes atilmados" and one peso of money.
No. 44: Soler, Jose Antonio. A.D.S. San Antonio de Embudo, 29 Feb. 1848. (10.5 x 16 cm). [2] pp. Concerns payment for his work and asks for an accounting to be given before the prefect of the county, Salvador Lucero.
No. 45: Cruz, José Ignacio. A.D.S. No place [New Mexico], 8 May 1849. (7.2 x 9.8 cm). [1] p. Cruz writes "Murio don Gregorio Lucero el dia 28 del mes de marzo y se le dio sepulto el dia 29 del propio mes de 1849."

No. 46: Esquibel, Teodoro. D.S. No place [New Mexico}, 1 September 1850. (15.2 x 19.2 cm). [1] p. Esquibel obliges himself to Francisco Martín to maintain the creek "en que pasa el agua del molino para abajo." Witness: Francisco Martínez.
No. 47: Martín[ez?], Francisco Antonio. Document. San Antonio del Embudo, 25 October 1852. (20 x 11 cm). [1] p. List of debts owed to the recently deceased Francisco A. Martín[ez?]. The list was compiled by his executors (but is unsigned by them) and the debtors and the sums owed are itemized. The debtors lived in Ojo Caliente, Taos, Joya, and Peñasco.
No. 48: Martínez, Francisco Antonio. Document. No place [San Antonio del Embudo ?], no date [late October 1852]. (21.5 x 19.8 cm). [2] pp. Inventory of Martínez's lands and monies at the time of his death that are to pass to his widow, María Ramona Archuleta. The list was compiled by his executors but is unsigned by them.
No. 49: Marquez, Antonio Avan. A.D.S. No place [San Antonio del Embudo ?], 7 November 1852. (13.5 x 19.2 cm). [1] p. The executors of the estate of Francisco Antonio Martínez (Antonio Avan Marquez & José Antonio Atencio) issue the official document (the "hijuela") settling that portion of the estate that passes to Martínez's daughter María Arcadia Martínez. Witness: José Atencio.
No. 50: Marquez, Antonio Avan. A.D.S. No place [San Antonio del Embudo ?], 7 November 1852. (24 x 19.2 cm). [2] p. The executors of the estate of Francisco Antonio Martínez (Antonio Avan Marquez & José Antonio Atencio) issue the official document (the "hijuela") settling that portion of the estate that passes to Martínez's wife, María Ramona Archuleta. Witness: José Atencio.
No. 51: Luján, Francisco. A.D.S. Nuestra Señora del Rosario de las Truchas, 10 November 1856. (32.5 x 19.5 cm). [1/3] p. Luján, a citizen of Las Truchas, acknowledges having received 80 pesos from María Ramona Archuleta on the account of the land that she is using "en la Junta de los Ríos." Witnesses: José Apolinario Bigil [i.e., Vigil], José Paulo Archuleta. Both signed. [On the same page as #52.]
No. 52: Luján, Francisco. A.D.S. Nuestra Señora del Rosario de las Truchas, 30 October 1857. (32.5 x 19.5 cm). [2/3] p. Luján, a citizen of the plaza of San Francisco, acknowledges having received 2 pesos "de dinero blanco" from María Ramona Archuleta on the account of the land that she is using "en la Junta de los Ríos." Witnesses: José María Sandoval, José Paulo Archuleta. Both signed. [On the same page as #51.]
No. 53: Trujillo, María Teodora. L.S. to Francisco Luján and María Ramona Vigil. "Punto de San Buenaventura de [??]mayo," 21 September 1856. (32.5 x 19.5 cm). [2] pp. (including integral address leaf reading: "A manos de don Francisco Luján and doña María Ramona Vigil. En Nuestra Señora del Rosario de las Truchas. Con portador present.") María Trujillo declares to Luján and Vigil that she has given permission for her son José Ramón Trujillo to marry their daughter María Ursulita Luján. Witnesses: Antonio Guadalupe Córdova and Juan Vilar Montoya. Both signed. [On the opposite side of the leaf bearing #s 51 & 52.]
Mo. 54: Luján, Francisco. A.D.S. San Antonio del Embudo, 26 October 1859. (13.5 x 18.8 cm). [1] p. Luján, a vecino of Embudo, acknowledges receiving131 pesos, dos reales, from María Ramona Archuleta in payment of her account for the land she uses of his in Los Ríos.

No. 55: Luján, Francisco. A.D.S. No place [San Antonio del Embudo ?], 19 January 1860. (25 x 10.5 cm). [½] p. Luján, a vecino of Embudo, acknowledges receiving 23 pesos from Maria Ramona Archuleta, proceeds from land they own jointly.
No. 56: Luján, Francisco. A.D.S. Las Truchas, 16 March 1860. (11 x 18.6 cm). [1] p. Luján issues a receipt to María Ramona Archuleta for 100 pesos on the account of a rancho that he sold her.
No. 57: Sabato, José Antonio. A.D.S. Río Arriba, 6 July 1860. (11 x 18.9 cm). [1] p. Sabato, the Juez de Paz of the county of Río Arriba, states that all of those who participate in the sharing of water for irrigation have reached an accord.

No. 61: Luján, José Francisquito. Document. Nuestra Señora del Rosario de las Truchas, 10 December 1862. (32.5 x 19.5 cm). [1] p. In the presence of José Miguel Vigil, the Juez de Paz and Alcalde of Las Truchas, Luján. a resident in the Plaza de Concepción de los Conejos, says he as received the sum of "60 [sic] seiscientos pesos 13 pesos 2 reales" from his godmother Ramoncita Archuleta for the land she is using in San Antonio del Embudo "en la Junta de los Ríos." Witnesses: José Aplinario Vigil, José Gabriel Romero (both signed) and signed by José Miguel Vigil. [On the verso of the integral address leaf of item # 53.]

No. 63: Baca, Manuel Cabeza de. A.D. Las Vegas, N.M., no date [ca. 1880–89?]. (21 x 13.3 cm). [2] pp. Baca, a lawyer, public official, legislator, and author, here makes notes in English on historical events in New Mexican history in the 1860s. Written on a piece of his office stationery. The obverse contains six very brief jottings that may not relate to the history of New Mexico but to business or private matters.
