Overview and metadata sections
Douglas Kent Hall was born on December 12, 1938, in Vernal, Utah, a rural community approximately two hundred miles from Salt Lake City. Hall spent his youth in Utah on a family farm where he developed a deep interest in the world of cowboys and rodeo from a very young age. He began writing while in high school and went on to study Creative Writing at a number of institutions before earning his BA in English at Brigham Young University in 1960. Hall then received his MFA from the Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa in 1964, and began teaching.
In 1965, Hall began experimenting with photography and he studied technique for the next two years. Some of Hall's earliest work is the result of his photographing his poet and writer friends while teaching at the University of Portland from 1964-1967. Freelance photography soon proved lucrative and in 1967 he began photographing for promotional and advertising companies and contributing text to magazines. That same year, Hall left academia and began a tour of Europe, later residing in London. He returned to the United States in 1969 and settled in New York City in 1971, where he had his first photography exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1974.
Hall's continuing interest in creative writing defined most of his early career and he published four novels and six photography books in the 1970s. Not limited to books, Hall also wrote an Academy Award-winning documentary about rodeo (his longtime interest) and a number of other unproduced screenplays. His novels from this time were often autobiographical and centered around his rural Mormon-influenced childhood, while the photography books explored subcultures to which Hall found himself drawn or incidentally introduced as an adult, such as rock and roll, bodybuilding, and prison life.
In 1977, Hall relocated from New York City to New Mexico, a move that would influence the next thirty years of his work. His subsequent proximity to the American southwest and border region, with its local environs and people, resulted in at least ten major publications and projects from the 1980s through the 2000s. As many if not more unpublished photography projects were also developed in this time, often based on travel to Russia, Japan, England, Brazil, and Australia.
Hall continued to photograph, travel, write, and exhibit up until his death. Douglas Kent Hall died on March 30, 2008. He was survived by his wife Dawn and son Devon.
The Douglas Kent Hall Papers document approximately fifty years of the creator's life and contain materials relating to the two major aspects of his work: creative writing and photography. The collection includes manuscripts, notes, and research files as well as black-and-white negatives, contact sheets, color transparencies and prints for almost all of Hall's published and unpublished writings and photography projects. Audio and visual materials are included in a number of magnetic and optical formats (cassette tapes, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and one 45rpm vinyl record). There is also handwritten and typed correspondence relating to those projects, and more general correspondence ranging from personal letters to business dealings with galleries. Unassociated and contextually ambiguous materials are also included.
A great majority of Hall's creative writing is present, consisting of books, plays, articles, essays, screenplays and teleplays, poetry, and short stories from his time as a student up until his death. There are drafts of major publications including his first novel On the Way to the Sky (1972) and Let 'Er Buck (1973), as well as the interviews and research behind the documentary The Great American Cowboy. A majority of the series consists of unpublished drafts and related materials that are usually thematically related to other writings and photography projects that Hall was developing concurrently. Other creative writings include a number of autobiographical short stories, freelance articles and reviews, a large amount of unpublished poetry, and many unproduced screenplays.
The creative bulk of the collection consists of at least 96,000 unique images in the form of black-and-white negatives, contact sheets, color transparencies, and prints spanning Hall's forty years of photography. Major subjects include rock and roll stars from the 1960s and early 1970s (including Jimi Hendrix and The Who), the American southwest (including rodeos, mission churches, border residents, and Native dances), poets and artists (including Mark Strand, Allen Ginsberg, W. S. Merwin) and photographic studies of subcultures including bodybuilding (with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno), prison life, drag racing, dance, and cowboy lifestyles. Locations photographed include the U.S.-Mexico border, the American West, New Mexico, New York City, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, and Russia. Since a number of these projects were developed as publications, the photographs are accompanied by manuscripts, notes, research files, and correspondence related to their production.
The collection is organized into four major series with additional subdivisions.

Collection Inventory
This series consists primarily of manuscripts for published and unpublished books and novels, short stories, poetry, articles, essays, screenplays, teleplays, documentaries, academic assignments, as well as treatments and proposals for unrealized projects. Research, interviews, correspondence, working drafts, audio and visual materials in a number of magnetic and optical formats, and reviews are also included with the project to which they correspond. Excerpts from Hall's writing projects (including books) often appeared in magazines; these materials are arranged with the project from which they originated.
A majority of the material dates from Hall's undergraduate and graduate education in English and Creative Writing undertaken at Utah State University, Brigham Young University, and the Iowa's Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa. Other material dates from Hall's time teaching at the University of Portland (1964-1967), and then to the end of his life. Many of the themes of Hall's creative writing were autobiographical or based on personal interest, and similar themes are often reflected in concurrent writings of multiple genres, as well as photography projects located elsewhere in the collection.
All the material in this series is of a non-photographic nature, i.e. publications and manuscripts that did not include or revolve around photographic images. Photography-based books and manuscripts can be found in Series 2: Photography. Correspondence files in this series relate to the project for which they were compiled, however, Series 3: General Correspondence may also include correspondence for projects listed here. Researchers should check both series for correspondence relating to specific projects.
Researchers should be aware that the great majority of this series is stored off-site. Please refer to the Storage Note at the top of the finding aid for a list of box locations.
Most of the material is undated and dates were assigned based on the date of publication or production, or on Hall's address (almost always recorded on the manuscript). The following are the residency and date relationships used to date materials in this series:
Provo, Utah: 1958-1960
Montana: circa 1962
Iowa City, Iowa: 1962-1964
Portland, Oregon: 1964-1967; 1970-1971
(travel): 1967
London, England: 1968
New York City: 1968-1970; 1972-1977
Alcalde, New Mexico: 1977-2002
Albuquerque, New Mexico: 2002-2008
This series is arranged in eight subseries with additional subdivisions.

This subseries consists primarily of drafts and associated research for freelance articles, mostly dating from the 1970s. Hall freelanced for a number of publications from approximately 1967 until 1986, including Rolling Stone and Esquire. This subseries contains only a small number of articles and does not represent all of Hall's freelance work.
Hall also wrote reviews and essays on the work of other artists and this subseries includes a few examples, one of which was published posthumously.
As is the case with most of Hall's creative material, some of the articles are directly related to research and writing that Hall was doing for other concurrent projects. When known, this information is provided at the file level. The name of the publication where the article appeared is provided when known.
This subseries is arranged alphabetically by title.

This subseries consists of manuscripts, research, interviews, correspondence, and reviews for published and unpublished novels and non-fiction books. The bulk of the material dates from the 1960s and 1970s, but some projects were being edited up to the creator's death. All the material in this subseries is of a non-photographic nature, i.e. publications and manuscripts that did not include or revolve around photographic images. Photography-based books and manuscripts can be found in Series 2: Photography.
Many of the themes of Hall's creative writing were autobiographical or based on personal interest, and similar themes are often reflected in concurrent writings and photography projects located elsewhere in the collection.
This subseries is arranged into two divisions:
Published consists of research, interviews, correspondence, manuscripts, and reviews of Hall's published work dating primarily from the 1970s. Most of the material is undated and has been assigned dates based on residency and when the final work was published. A number of works have multiple working titles.
Unpublished consists of research, interviews, correspondence, and manuscripts of Hall's unpublished work dating primarily from the 1970s. Most of the material is undated and has been assigned dates based on context and residency. A number of works have multiple working titles.
The chronology for Hall's residency is provided at the series level. Unless otherwise noted, the majority of drafts are TMs with autograph corrections.

This series consists of photographic and manuscript material spanning Hall's entire career, from when he started experimenting with photography in 1965 until his death. Manuscripts, research, interviews, correspondence, working drafts, audio and visual materials in magnetic and optical formats, and reviews are also included with the project to which they correspond.
There are approximately 54,000 35mm black-and-white negatives (in 9,000 strips); 12,000 120mm black-and-white negatives (in 3,000 strips); and 30,000 positive color transparencies (slides) totaling at least 96,000 unique photographic images. Of these, approximately 1,715 images appear as production prints for published books, including (1,069) 11x17-inch prints; (616) 8x10-inch prints, and 30 prints of other smaller sizes. Most of these prints are marked and tagged for production by publishing companies. There are an additional (16) 16x20 inch prints of Los Matachines de Acalade.
There are contact sheets (positive prints made from pages of negatives) for most of the negatives present in the collection. Hall labeled almost all of his negatives and contact sheets to correspond by number so the contact sheets can and should be referenced as a guide to the original negatives. The color transparencies are unique and are not duplicated as contact sheets.
The materials have been arranged according to the publication or project for which they were photographed or compiled. Hall worked on many projects simultaneously and similar images may appear in both subseries. For example, Hall collaborated with Arnold Schwarzenegger on both Arnold: The Education of a Body Builder and Bodyshaping for Women, as well as being a personal friend. Therefore, photographs of Schwarzenegger appear in the files for both these publications plus a subject file located in Subseries 2A. Considerations of this kind should be made for any collaborator or topic that spanned many projects.
Correspondence files in this series relate to the project for which they were compiled, however, Series 3: General Correspondence may also include correspondence for projects listed here. Researchers should check both series for correspondence relating to specific projects.
These images, like their published counterparts in Subseries 2B: By Project were widely exhibited in Hall's lifetime, and usually well beyond the timeframe when they were taken.
This series is arranged into two subseries.

This series consists of negatives, contact sheets, color transparencies (slides), manuscripts, research, interviews, correspondence, and reviews for Douglas Kent Hall's published photography books. Hall published fine art photography books, illustrated histories, and instructional manuals illustrated with photographs for demonstration.
Some series of photographs were used for more than publication, as is the case with the prison photographs used as source material for both In Prison and Prison Tattoos. Hall would also reprint images for exhibitions many years after they were initially photographed, as is the case with the Rock and Roll series initially created in the 1960s and 1970s, but reprinted in the 1990s and 2000s. For this reason contact sheets, negatives and transparencies are arranged with the first publication that they appeared in or were compiled for.
This subseries is arranged chronologically.
Physical Description65 boxes
Photography began in 1967 as part of a freelance promotional project for Sunn Amplification and lasted until 1970. Hall arranged the "Rock Star" negatives, contact sheets and transparencies by the name of the musician or band pictured, hence they are not numbered like the other photograph series. For this reason, bands and individuals have been listed at the file level, along with manuscript notations from the negative sleeves (which sometimes include venue information). Venues include: The Apollo, Fillmore East, Fillmore West, the Whisky a Go-Go, Café a Go-Go, The Pavilion, and Tanglewood.

Publication and exhibit. Excerpt from digital documentation by Dawn Hall that accompanied the collection: This ongoing series started in the late 1960s when Douglas Kent Hall and Alfred Bush, Curator of Western Americana, Firestone Library, Princeton, traveled across country together. Alfred would drive, Douglas would photograph the people in cars as they sped by. The series encompasses photographs of walkers-by, and such. Some of the series is shot in New York City. Some of the series is photographs of clouds passing by. Some of the photographs appear in the book Passing Through, some in the book In New Mexico Light.

This subseries consists of negatives, contact sheets, color transparencies (slides), manuscripts, research, interviews, correspondence and a few prints for Douglas Kent Hall's unpublished photography projects. The material spans Hall's entire career and most of the projects are thematically related to other concurrent projects or publications located through the rest of the collection. When known, those relationships are listed at the project level.
The projects included here are either collections of photographs with a thematic relationship compiled over many years, such as the Poets and Notable People project files; or projects intended for publication (complete with manuscripts) that were never published. The book Hall was working on at his death, "City Light: Douglas Kent Hall's New York," is essentially complete, but unpublished.
This subseries includes a number of identified portraits, most notably of artists and poets active in Hall's lifetime, such as Mark Strand, W. S. Merwin, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Anaïs Nin, Bruce Naumen, Dorothy Brett, Hunter S. Thompson, Carlos Fuentes, and Dennis Hopper. Other notable images include candid photographs of Ethel Kennedy on a ski trip in the 1970s, and Robert F. Kennedy speaking in May 1968. A number of identifications are listed at the folder and project level.
These images, like their published counterparts in Subseries 2A: By Publication / Film were widely exhibited in Hall's lifetime, and usually well beyond the timeframe when they were taken.
This subseries is arranged chronologically.

This series consists of personal and business related correspondence that Hall kept separate from his project files (located by project elsewhere in the collection), with the bulk of the material dating from the 1970s. Included are personal letters from family and friends as well as business correspondence with publishers, galleries, and independent collectors.
This series does contain correspondence that references projects and publications for which there are already separate correspondence files located elsewhere in the collection. For this reason, researchers seeking all correspondence relating to a specific project or publication should also reference these general files in the corresponding timeframe.
Correspondents of note include Adrian Mitchell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, William Stafford, Mark Strand, Alton Walpole, Larry Bell, and Terry Allen. Notes have been made at the file level for these and other names.
In addition to chronological files, Hall separated some material from the general files including three files of gallery-related correspondence and three personal files for Adrian Mitchell, William Stafford and Mark Strand, which are located towards the end of the series.
Some correspondence was undated, but context allowed for general dates to be assigned, as is the case with material thought to date from the early 1970s and therefore dated from 1970-1974. Undated correspondence from within a specific years or range of years is located at the back of the corresponding folder. Completely undated and disassociated correspondence is located toward the end of the series.
This series is arranged chronologically, and then by correspondent.
