Overview and metadata sections
Alexandros Xydēs, Greek diplomat and art critic, was born in 1917 in Liverpool, England. He was a man of intellect and vision and one of the most influential figures of post-war Greek art criticism. Xydēs began to collect art in 1938. In 1999 his personal collection of works by Greek and foreign artists was donated by him and his wife, Dorothea, to the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessalonikē (Greece). His acquaintance with George Seferis began during World War II when they both served in the Middle East and later on at the Greek Embassy in London during the Cyprus crisis, 1957 to 1960. Xydēs is also known for his dedication to Cyprus and his activity against the Greek dictatorship, 1967-1974. He was also the author of several books relating on Greek art and politics. He died in 2004.
Consists of Alexandros Xydēs collection of professional correspondence, literature concerning Greek and Cypriot foundations, organizations, and committees, typed manuscripts of articles and essays of several authors, as well as governmental reports. There are also printed material such as off-prints and clippings with a focus on Greek politics, Cyprus, human rights, and international relations. Theater programs, flyers, brochures, and ballots of several political parties of Greece complement the collection.

The collection is a gift of Alexandros Xydēs to the Princeton University Library with the assistance of the Program in Hellenic Studies.
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Includes a folder with literature regarding Cyprus during 1974, as well as lists of Cypriots or Greek Cypriots that were enclaved or stranded at Mandres-Famagusta or other prisons and remain missing. This catalog has been prepared by the Cyprus Committee of Parents and Relatives of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing.

There is also a typed letter by P. A. Zannas to Xydēs, a typed manuscript of the article "The Englightment and Womanhood: Cultural Change and the Politics of Exclusion" by Paschalis Kitromilides, brochures, and clippings of Greek and French newspapers.

Daskalakēs, and a bulletin by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece regarding national Greek issues such as the Macedonian and the national movements; also included are typed manuscripts of an essay "Phylakismena Mnēmata. Mia vdomada stēn Kypro"; and "Dōdekalogos tou Tsinganou" by Vagias M. Tsoulas and a draft of a diary, 1959-1968.

Includes a typescript of a statement by Spyros Kyprianou, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, in the general debate of the 19th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (January 26, 1965). There is also a typescript of the statement issued by President Makarios at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, Cyprus, July 7, 1966; clippings of Greek, French, and English newspapers such as Le Monde Diplomatique, Kathēmerinē, and others complement the collection.

There is also an issue of the newsletter Preuves Informations, Paris, 5 Nov. 1963; the periodical la semaine égyptienne, nos. 11-12 (June 1941); 2 issues of the weekly magazine Ho Tachydromos (December 2 and 4, 1963); Vogue (July 1958); clippings of several Greek newspapers and a few French and English regarding Seferis's poetry and his death; a brochure of the Program for Modern Greek Studies at Harvard University. The third folder consists of a collection of clippings of several Greek newspapers and a few in French regarding Seferis's poetry entitled "Tribute to Seferis, Paris, April 1982."

Includes flyers, brochures, and ballots of several political parties of Greece such as the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), New Democracy (ND), Nea Epochē, Communist Party of Greece (KKE), Coalition of the Left and Progress (Synaspismos), and Hellenic Socialist Party [Hellēniko Sosialistiko Komma (E.S.K.)]. There is also the program and the inaugural talk of the president of the Coalition of the Left and Progress during the 2nd Ordinary Conference (14-17 March 1996) and the 2nd Conference (December 1995).
