Edwards, Lovett Fielding.

Edwards was an English author. He was born in 1901 at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He went to Yugoslavia in 1931 and travelled throughout the country resulting in various published books, including "Profane Pilgrimage" Duckworth 1938, "A Wayfarer in Yugoslavia" (Methuen 1939), and "Danube Stream" (Muller 1940). He translated into English many works by Yugoslav authors and about twenty from French and Italian.

The collection contains two typescripts by Edwards: "The Octagon, Yugoslavia Today" (heavily annotated), and "The Yugoslavs, A Portrait" (first section only), concerning the World War II era. Also included in the collection is a photograph album presented to Edwards upon his return to Yugoslavia in 1967, including 22 albumen prints mostly of scenes in Zenica and its museum in Yugoslavia, dated from 1963 to 1967. There is also a large amount of albumen prints, undated, of Edwards' and his wife, as well as of scenes of Belgrade, Ohrid, Serbia, Macedonia, Byzantine monuments and historical sites, portraits of eminent figures, and a few of artworks. There is also an autograph letter to Edwards by the rector of Holy Trinity in Yarmouth, Canada, dated 1948.

Addition of photo album, unbound and bound ms, loose photographs are a gift of Bristow and Garland in 2010 (AM 2010-117).

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. This series consists of a photograph album and several black-and-white photographs of Edwards and his family, everyday life in Yugoslavia, Byzantine monuments in Serbia, Ohrid, Prespa, and Fyrom, historical sites, portraits, and art works.

Scope and Contents

Includes a photograph album presented to Edwards upon his return to Yugoslavia in 1967. Contains 22 (chiefly 6.4 x 8.7 cm.) albumen prints mostly of scenes in Zenica (panoramic views of the city and the buildings) and its museum (interior of the museum with historical artifacts) in Yugoslavia; the photographs, dated from 1963 to 1967, are mounted on hard boards bearing handwritten captions in Serbian. Attached on the inner side of the front cover is a print with a handwritten note: "Mrs. and Mr. Mickey and Lowett Edwards in the signe of dignity your trulli, Zenica (Yugoslavia) 28.XII.1967"; on the back cover there is a print with the autogram of Ibrahimcic Fikreta and another one depicting its caricature according to the handwritten notes. The allbum is bound in blue leather with gold gilded stripes over boards.

Includes 35 black-and-white images of the Monasteries of Manasija, Gračanica, Dečani, Studenica, Sopočani, Kurbinovo, St. Andrew, and St. Spas, with printed and handwritten captions in Serbian on verso.

Includes 15 black-and-white photographs mostly of the everyday life in the fishing village of Pestani in Ohrid known for its outside ordinal folkore. The images bear printed and handwritten captions in Serbian and French on the verso.

Includes 20 black-and-white photographs of several historical sites in Serbia: the Skull Tower monument (Cele Kula) in Nis; Lepenski Vir (Mesolithic archaeological site); Krajputaši grave markers; Golubac fortress; fortress of Smederevska Turdava; Popova Sapka ski center. Also included are four color photographs of the interior of an unknown museum.
