Griffith, William E.

William Griffith was an American author and editor. He had an active career in the newspaper profession, having been on the staff of several of the New York papers. Griffith was managing editor of Hampton's Magazine, 1906-1910; editor of McCall's Magazine, 1911-1912; editorial director of the National Sunday Magazine, 1912-1916; and associate editor of Current Opinion. His best-known books of verse are: City Views and Visions, 1911; Loves and Losses of Pierrot, 1916; City Pastorals, 1918; and The House of the Sphinx, and other poems. Griffith was also president of the Poetry Society Forum Press.

The collection consists of letters sent to the American editor and author William Griffith from other authors, poets, and editors, primarily about poetry. Correspondents include Alice Fay, Anne Kelledy Gilbert, Adelaide Manola Hughes (Mrs. Rupert Hughes), Robert Loveman, Marjorie Meeker, David Morton, Thomas Moult, Rose O'Neil, Lizette Woodworth Reese, Faith Van Valkenburgh Vilas, Post Wheeler, John Hall Wheelock, and Margaret Widdemer. The subject of the letters is primarily about poetry.

In addition, there is some correspondence addressed to Griffith's wife Florence. Included is a poem, by an unidentified author, addressed to Florence Griffith, dated 1940, and titled "A Christmas Prayer, The Holy Child."

All items were removed from books belonging to Griffith. Some were presentation copies, written by the same author of the letter that was tipped in.
