Gustave Fougères (1863-1927), a Hellenist and professor of archaeology, was the director of L'Ecoles Française d'Athènes during the years 1915 to 1919. His name is connected with French cultural affairs in Greece during that period. He is also known for outstanding archaeological research on ancient Greek history and civilization. During his directorship, Fougères corresponded with several Hellenists, archaeologists, Byzantinists and epigraphists, among them Charles Picard, Gabriel Millet, Charles Dugas,and Emile Bourguet
The collection consists of correspondence (1915-1919) of Gustave Fougères with scholars during his directorship at l'École française d'Athénes. All the letters are long and relate to the activities of the school. All the correspondents are members of it: Emile Bourguet, Hellenist on his mission in Delphi; Edouard Driault, Hellenist; Charles Dugas, Hellenist and specialist in Greek ceramics, writing on various Greek subjects; Gabriel Millet (1867/1953), Byzantinist, on Mount Athos; Charles Picard (1883-1965), Hellenist and archaeologist, director of the French school after Fougères (1919-1925); Girard Paul (1852-1922), Hellenist, archaeologist, and epigraphist; Jean Hatzfeld, archaeologist and Hellenist; Alfred Croiset (1845-1923); Edmond Pottier (1855-1934), art historian and archaeologist; and Louis Auguste Girard.
Acquired with matching funds provided by the Program in Hellenic Studies with the support of the Stanley J. Seeger Hellenic Fund in 2009.
