Overview and metadata sections

This is an open collection of documents and manuscripts (some official) from several European countries, including England, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Ireland, and Switzerland. Most of the documents shed light on daily life or on official, political, religious, or colonial matters in Europe between the 16th and the 19th centuries. They include marriage certificates, deeds, bills of sale, indictments, accounts, patents, passports, power of attorney, appointments, indentures, orders, reports, law cases, purchase agreements, petitions, warrants, extracts of meetings, last will and testaments, papal decrees, and a mansucript of the Comédie Française for King Louis XV. Some of the names associated with the material include Marie Antoinette, Henry II, King of France, Baron Thomas Fairfax, Charles IX, King of France, Louis XIV and Louis XVI, Kings of France, Mary Stuart, Queen of the Scots, Mary II, Queen of England, John, 2nd Earl of Rochester, Queen Victoria of England, Albert, Prince Consort of Queen Victoria, Sir Henry Carew, Sir George Villiers Buckingham, George III, King of England, Maximillian I, Holy Roman Emperor, Cardinal Rohan, and many more monarchs, sovereigns, dignitaries, and officials, as well as common individuals.

Also included are documents about Morocco in Portuguese.

Arranged in alphabetical order by country of origin, and then by date.

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family or subject.

This collection was formed from multiple accessions. Accession numbers are listed at the file level.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.

This collection was processed by Dina Britain in 2009. Finding aid written by Elizabeth Mulvey in December 2009.
