Overview and metadata sections
Pym, more properly known as Horatio Noble Pym, was a confidential solicitor, book collector, and the editor of the best-selling private journal of the Quaker writer Caroline Fox, Memories of Old Friends, published in 1881. Admirer of the masters of English literature, he particularly reverenced Charles Dickens.
The collection consists of over 100 letters to Pym and his wife on literary, artistic, and social subjects --and with many references to Charles Dickens, his life and books -- including twenty letters (1882-1895) by F. C. Burnand, eight (1883-1889) by Mary ("Mamie") Dickens, and twenty-four (1883-1902) by Georgina Hogarth (and her photograph) Other writers, artists, and politicians include F. Anstey, Harry Furniss, William Ewart Gladstone, Andrew Lang, Sidney Lee, Frederick Lehmann, John Lubbock, John Murray, James Payn (with photograph and proof of his short story "The Guinea Box"), Princess Louise, George Richmond, Edward Linley Sambourne, and Leslie Stephen.
Purchased from a Sotheby's sale in January 2008 (AM2008-63).
