Overview and metadata sections
Louis Olivier was director of the Revue générale des sciences pures et appliquées [ General Review of Sciences Pure and Applied], founded in 1890. Organized cultural tours began in France in 1896, at the time of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens. This ushered in a new era, typified by education cruises offered by the Revue générale des sciences which, according to Louis Olivier, its founder and director, aimed "to make it possible for all tourists to improve through study, undertaken with the guidance of recognized experts, their understanding of the region visited."
The collection consists of Olivier's handwritten notes and manuscripts on the ancient history of Egypt and the Middle East, particularly Greece (and Athens). Topics include great periods in Egyptian history, the Trojan War, the conquest of Sparta, early Greek colonies, the Hellenic race, and the empires of Athens, Persia, and Phoenicia.
Folders are arranged alphabetically by title of manuscript or subject of notes.
Collection was purchased from Librairie Bertram in 2007 with matching funds provided by the Program in Hellenic Studies with the support of the Stanley J. Seeger Hellenic Fund (AM2007-120).
Folder inventory added by Nicholas Williams '2015 in 2012.
