Overview and metadata sections
Theophilus Parvin III, a Presbyterian missionary from Buenos Aires, Argentina , was born in 1799. He was the son of Theophilus Parvin Jr. and Bathsheba Clark. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1818. Theophilus Parvin III married Mary Caesar Augustus Rodney in 1826, and shortly after their marriage they returned to Buenos Aires. Together they had one daughter, Mary, and one son, also named Theophilus, born in 1829. Theophilus Parvin III died on 15 December 1835 at Cumberland Co., N.J., and was buried at Old Stone Church Cemetery in Cumberland County.
The colletion consists chiefly of manuscripts of the Rev. Theophilus Parvin III. The manuscripts include a diary of his first trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, dating from 25 July 1823, aboard the schooner GLEANER. With the diary is an incomplete, typed transcript by Parvin's great granddaughter. There are several other autograph manuscripts containing religious teachings, verses from the bible, psalms, etc.; one of the manuscripts is written in Spanish. There are many very small pieces of paper with additional writings; in some cases Parvin used paper from correspondence he received. Also included are a letter from Samuel Lawrence, dated 8 September 1832, and a note from James B. Parvin, dated 15 March 1834.
Arranged by date.
Gift of Rachel A. Baker, great grand daughter of Rev. Parvin, on July 28, 1965.
