Overview and metadata sections

Machen, Arthur, 1863-1947

Arthur Machen was a Welsh writer of tales, mystical, romantic, and macabre.

The collection contains 11 letters (1895-1945) of Arthur Machen to different individuals and 22 photographs of the houses in which Machen lived from 1863 to 1929. Correspondents include F. C. Owlett, Nathan van Patten, and Thomas Wright. The photographs are all signed by Machen, and they are accompanied by negative duplicates and a handwritten list of the addresses of the houses. In addition, the collection includes one page of an unidentified fragment of a holograph manuscript signed by Machen; a woodcut portrait of Machen by T. Fytton Armstrong, signed by Machen and inscribed to Nathan van Patten; a small, hand-set booklet (1953) labeled "A Critical Essay by Arthur Machen," one of fifty copies, with a watercolor drawing and a colophon signed by Carl Swanson; and a printed article, "The Cup and Arthur Machen," by Maude V. P. Hazelton.

Arranged by accession number.

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject.

The woodcut of Machen, booklet, and other memorabilia were a gift of Mrs. Joseph Vodrey on June 28, 1976.

The unidentified holograph manuscript fragment was a gift of the estate of Alexander D. Wainwright, Princeton Class of 1939, via Joseph J. Felcone, on Oct. 30, 2000.
