John Anstis (1639-1714) was Registrar of the Archdeaconry Court of Cornwall in Lunna in the parish of St Neot in Cornwall. His son John Anstis (1669-1744) was Garter King-of-Arms from 1719 to 1744 and a heraldic writer.
The collection consists chiefly of documents of John Anstis (1639-1714) and his family. Most of the documents concern property, clothing, and jewelry belonging to and left by Anstis's daughter, Mrs. Mary Hooper, at the time of her death, as well as to expenses incurred while Mary was living will her father during her terminal illness.

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject.
