This is a finding aid. It is a description of archival material held at the Princeton University Library: Manuscripts Division. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described below are physically available in their reading room, and not digitally available through the web.
Overview and metadata sections
Edward T. Cone was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on May 4, 1917. He earned a B.A. and a M.F.A. from Princeton University, studying under Roger Sessions, and afterward held a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship at Princeton. In 1947, he joined the faculty, teaching music history, theory, and composition until 1985. Additionally, he was an Andrew D. White Professor-at-Large for Cornell University from 1979 until 1983. His other awards and distinctions include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Old Dominion Fellowship at Princeton, an ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award, and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Princeton.
Cone's musical compositions include a symphony and music for piano, voice, chorus, orchestra, and chamber ensembles. In addition to these works, he wrote several books: Musical Form and Musical Performance (1968), The Composer's Voice (1974), and Music: A View From Delft (1989).
Edward T. Cone died in Princeton on October 23, 2004.
This collection consists of musical sketches, musical manuscripts, and personal papers of Edward T. Cone. It features early and working drafts of many of Cone's finished compositions as well as sketches of those that he considered incomplete. The collection also contains correspondence from friends of Cone, including John Berryman and Roger Sessions, and some of Cone's personal papers, including poetry by John Berryman and William Meredith.
