John Story Gulick and his wife, Elizabeth Milligan Gulick, were American collectors.
This collection of autograph letters, dated 1785?-1898, by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Hancock, Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, and other American statesmen, consists of 24 letters, 3 signatures, 3 newspaper clippings, and a poem by Louisa C. Adams in pocket of front cover. Compiled by John S. Gulick and his wife, Elizabeth Milligan Gulick. Previously bound in a black lacquered binding with leather spine and pearl bosses in the four corners on upper and lower boards, with a painting of a bouquet of flowers surrounded by an ornate gold border on upper cover.
The following standard abbreviations, or their variations, are used to identify materials in this collection: ALS = autograph letter signed, TLS = typed letter signed, AMsS = autograph manuscript signed.
Maintains the folio order of the original bound scrapbook.
The collection was formed as a result of a departmental practice of combining into one collection manuscript material of various accessions relating to a particular author.
Collected by John Story Gulick and his wife (AM12800).
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. In 2022, restrictions on two Thomas Jefferson letters where researchers were required to use surrogates were lifted as part of a restrictions review project.
