Overview and metadata sections

Laurence Pollinger Ltd

D. H. (David Herbert) Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English novelist, poet, storywriter, playwright, and essayist.

The collection consists of typed manuscripts of the first and second editions of D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover, correspondence between Laurence Pollinger Ltd. and the major players involved in the contentious publication of the first unexpurgated American edition of the novel, fourteen contracts regarding English and foreign language versions, and newspaper clippings documenting the obscenity trial against Lady Chatterley's Lover in England. Laurence Pollinger Ltd. served as the executor of Lawrence's literary estate and maintained the copyrights for his writings beginning in the 1950s, represented his widow Frieda, and later served as her literary executor. The correspondence is the most interesting portion of the collection, as it illustrates in detail the numerous controversies over the publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover, including censorship over the novel's alleged obscenity.

The following standard abbreviation, or its variation, is used to identify materials in this collection: TMs = typed manuscript

Scope and Contents
This series consists of typed manuscripts (including carbon and Xerox) of the first and second editions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. These editions were later entitled The First Lady Chatterley and John Thomas and Lady Jane, respectively. They have been disqualified as copies of the original manuscripts due to numerous differences in spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. These manuscripts are probably versions that Laurence Pollinger shared with prospective publishers. This series is organized by edition. Lawrence wrote three versions of his novel. It is the third version that is known as the definitive Lady Chatterley's Lover (first published at the author's expense in Florence in 1928). Lady Chatterley's Lover, first version, later entitled The First Lady Chatterley: TMs(carbon) with minor holograph revisions, [early 1940s], 357 pp., dates not examined. 1 folder.
Scope and Contents
This typescript contains punctuation marks, mostly commas and hyphens, that are absent from the two main published versions (Dial Press, 1944, and Heinemann, 1972) in a sufficient number to suggest it could not have been used by either publisher as a source for the text. The Publisher's Note in the Heinemann edition states that Lawrence's spelling, capitalization, punctuation and undivided narrative was verified by a line-by-line reading of his manuscript (a Xerox copy of which was provided by the University of Texas), thereby confirming that the present typescript is not of this original manuscript. This in turn suggests that even though the paper's watermarks are American, this typescript is not the one prepared by Willard Hougland, to whom Esther Forbes (in Manuscript Report, The First Lady Chatterley, Dial Press, 1944) and Roland Gant (in Publisher's Note, John Thomas and Lady Jane, Heinemann, 1972) refer; he transcribed the first two versions of the novel from the original manuscripts shown to him by Frieda Lawrence. However, its title ("Lady Chatterley's Lover") suggests that this typescript pre-dates the Dial Press edition (1944), which christened it The First Lady Chatterley (a title retained by the Heinemann edition). The last page reads "End of Volume 1," which suggests that it was prepared with a view to publishing all three versions as a set (Mondadori in Italy published a three-in-one volume in translation in 1954). It may well be a typescript that Pollinger retained in his office for circulation among publishers. (Sotheby's, 133)

Scope and Contents
This typescript differs hardly at all from the first published version (Heinemann, 1972). It also bears American watermarks, and appears to date from before 1972, when it acquired its title of John Thomas and Lady Jane from Heinemann. In fact, it seems likely that it is the typescript prepared by Willard Hougland of Santa Fe (see above), from which the Heinemann edition of 1972 was set. It would therefore date from before 1944, as Hougland's typescripts are mentioned by Esther Forbes in the Dial Press edition of The First Lady Chatterley. It would also be the typescript discussed in the Publisher's Note of the Heinemann edition; it was lent by Pollinger to the Editorial Director, Roland Gant, and compared with a photocopy of the original manuscript so that typing errors caused by the misreading of the manuscript could be corrected before printing (the typescript, for example, misspells Marehay Farm as "Marchay Farm"). It is also mentioned by Pollinger in a letter to Angelino Ravagli of 10 September 1959 [see box 2, folder 9], in which he expressed his hope that A. S. Frere of Heinemann will publish all three versions of the novel in one volume. In his Publisher's Note, Roland Gant states that the "spate of prosecutions of publishers for issuing allegedly 'obscene' books" made this project impossible at the time Pollinger lent him this typescript. Scope and Contents

This series primarily consists of correspondence between Laurence Pollinger Ltd. and the major players involved in the contentious publication of the first unexpurgated American edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover, including Lawrence's widow Frieda, her third husband Angelo Ravagli, and various publishers. Also included is a letter by Aldous Huxley in which he suggests that the American Writer's Guild unite with the English Society of Authors to "officially stigmatize Grove" for issuing "a book against the wishes of the author's legal representative, and without entering into a preliminary contract." This series is organized alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically by date, with miscellaneous material located at the end.

The letter counts include copies of letters, not just originals. All newspaper clippings included with the correspondence have been preservation photocopied.
