Overview and metadata sections
The Manuscripts Division holds a total of 244 stone seals from Mesopotamia, Syria, and other areas of the ancient Near East. The seals are in three collections, respectively assembled and donated by Moses Taylor Pyne (1855-1921), Class of 1877; Robert Garrett (1875-1961), Class of 1897; and Edward D. Balken (1874-1960), Class of 1897. The seals range in age from Sumerian and Akkadian examples of the 2nd and 3rd millennia BCE to Persian examples of the pre-Islamic Sassanian period. The stone seals are primarily cylinder seals and stamp seals carved from hematite, serpentine, steatite, chalcedony, chlorite, lapis lazuli, quartz, and other varieties of stone.
Superscripts are displayed in curly braces.
The seals are numbered in three series: 1) Pyne, nos. 31-134; 2) Garrett, nos. 1-49, 136-143; and 3) Balken, nos. 1-77 (excluding 74, which is skipped.) In addition, there are 6 seals without accession numbers.
The seals were gifts of Moses Taylor Pyne (Princeton Class of 1877), Robert Garrett (Princeton Class of 1897), and Edward D. Balken (Princeton Class of 1897).
The finding aid is comprised of two unpublished preliminary listings: (1) Rudolf H. Mayr, "Preliminary Checklist of Stone Seals in the Princeton University Library"; and (2) Albrecht Goetze, "Mesopotamian Seals in the Collection of Robert Garrett." Cyrus H. Gordon wrote several brief articles relating in whole or part to the Princeton collections: "Seals from Ancient Western Asia," Princeton University Library Chronicle, vol. 12, no. 2 (1951), pp. 49-54; "Near Eastern Saeals and Cuneiform Tablets," Princeton University Library Chronicle, vol. 14, no. 1 (1952), pp. 45-46; "Near Eastern Seals in Princeton and Philadelphia," Orientalia, new series, vol. 22, fasc. 3 (1953), pp. 242-50, plates 57-70. There is also one stone seal in the Scheide Library and a substantial collection of stone seals in the Princeton University Art Museum.

Physical Description1 item
Worship scene; a god, apparently with no distinguishing characteristics, stands left; immediately before him a lahmu holds a vase from which water flows; it flows down over the god's hand, as if he is washing his hand. Behind the lahmu stands a lamassu; behind her stands a secondary figure of the weather god Adad holding a forked thunderbolt in his outstretched left hand; he holds his right hand up behind his head, but whatever he carries in that hand, if anything, is lost to a chip. Before him is a small male figure, whose arms end in thunderbolts, half kneeling and turning his head back towards Adad.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene of three figures: Ishtar ascends left with her foot on the forepart of a lion, her head facing; she holds a harpe-sword down in her left hand, and a sceptre consisting of a mace and two lion-headed harpe-swords in her outstretched right hand. Before her stands an utukku wearing a tall conical hat. Behind him stands a lamassu. In the sky before Ishtar is a crescent; in the sky before the lamassu is a 'horned toad'; in the lower field, a fly.
Physical DescriptionFrieze of five figures: from left to right, a lahmu kneels over a mountain (?) holding a bull (or a gazelle?) up on its hind legs; a liongriffin, its wings apparently folded, apparently attacking the last; a suppliant goddess; and a kusarikku holding a standard. Between the bull and the lion, a human head; in the sky behind the liongriffin is a star of eight points; an uncertain device behind the lahmu and kusarikku.
Physical Description{f} š i - i t - t a - n i D A M {m} q i š t i ( N I G . B A ) n i n - š u b u r G E M E ₂ š a {d} E n - k i, "Šittani, wife of Qišti-Ninšubur, servant of Enki" A woman in a long robe stands left, both arms raised in salutation.
Physical DescriptionSlightly concave shape. Worship scene of three figures: Ishtar ascends left with her right foot on the forepart of a lion; before her, the 'triuphator'; behind him, the priest with sprinkler and bucket standing on a pedestal. In the sky before Ishtar, a star of eight rays, each of which ends in a small ball.
Physical Description{d} U T U {d} a - a "Šamaš, Aya" Salutation scene: the primary figure is a standing man wearing a fringed garment and a conical headdress; perhaps he represents the king. Before him stands the worshipper, who makes the gesture of salutation with his right hand while holding the other at his waist. A kilted man approaches behind him, carrying a bent stick (throwstick? bow?) in his left hand. Sufficient space for a three line inscription remains, but only one line was inscribed; the remaining spae was filled with a monkey over a 'bow-legged dwarf'. In the lower field before the primary figure, a ball-and-staff; above that, (?); in the lower field behind the worshipper, a scorpion.
Physical Description. . . . . . d u m u u r - {d} e n - l i l ₂ - l a ₂ {!} Introduction to the king, who wears the fringed garment; the introducing goddess wears the flounced garment. At the king's knees, a 'bow-legged dwarf' (?) (which is probably secondary to the rest of the scene), an astral symbol above. The latter now consists mainly of a crescent, but traces of a star within it remain.
Physical DescriptionContest scene composed of five figures; at the left, two bulls flank a nude man in a manner similar to the master-of-animals scene, but the man faces right; the bull on the left faces the viewer while the other faces right, where he is attacked by a lion; another human figure, his face towards the viewer, pulls the lion away from behind.
Physical Descriptionb u r - m a - m a I R ₁ ₁ {d} n i n - l i l ₂ - l a ₂ {!} d u m u p u z u r - š a r - x ? Introduction to a goddess seated on a two-niched throne, an astral symbol above her.
Physical DescriptionSlightly concave shape. Salutation scene; a god wearing a flounced garment and holding a cup in his outstretched right hand sits left on a two-niched throne with a low back, an astral symbol consisting of star-disc crescent; before him stands a man wearing a mantle and kilt; behind the god stands another man, wearing a fringed garment; his headdress seems to have a single horn in front. In the terminal space, two rampant gazelles, crossed; above them, a rampant lion left, turning his head back towards a bird standing left.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene; a lamassu and an utukku stand facing one another on either side of another standing figure, probably a god; behind the utukku a kusarikku and a lahmu holding one another. In the upepr field, a turtle (?), an astral symbol, and a fly; in the lower field, a fish and a lion-headed fish (?).
Physical DescriptionFrieze of figures; left to right: Kusarikku standing right holds a mace-standard; an erect lion attacks a goat sitting on a low conical structure, between them a fly; an erect liongriffin fights a lahmu, between them a fish; in the sky behind the liongriffin, a crescent.
Physical DescriptionPresentation scene; a goddess sits on a niched throne, holding a rod and reel, her feet on a foot stool; traces of a crescent (erased?) in the sky; before her stand two worshippers, the first in audience posture, the second in salutation posture. As a terminal in the space behind the latter a lahmu (?) holds a bull up by one leg and places his foot on the bull's head.
Physical DescriptionOffering scene: Shamash ascending, his right foot on a stylized mountain, holds a saw in his right hand; in the sky, an astral symbol. Before him, the king approaches carrying a ram; behind him a lamassu and an utukku wearing a tall conical cap.
Physical DescriptionSalutation scene of three figures: Shamash, ascending, and two worshippers (?). In the sky before Shamash is a circular astral symbol; in the sky between the worshippers is a vessel; below that is a short staff or a tall vessel. A ground line runs below the three figures.
Physical Descriptiona - w i - i l - l a d u m u i - d i - i a - t u m I R ₃ {d} I M Worship scene with three figures: Adad stands holding a thunderbolt; before him a spade symbol; a man in the pose of the utukku; and a nude female figure. In the space behind the man, a crook; above that, a crescent.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene (salutation): the weather god Adad ascends left, his right foot resting on a standing liongriffin, rain coming from its mouth; Adad carries a harpe-sword in his left hand, and a lion's head sprouts from his right shoulder. In the sky, an eight-pointed star. Before him is a small worshipper in salutation posture, standing in the field over the liongriffin's head. Behind the worshipper, a kusarikku fights a lion; in the field between them is a ball-and-staff below a ???. Over the lion's head is a small crescent. In the terminal area an inscription of three or four lines was erased and replaced with a full-size worshipper and a large lion-headed harpe-sword. The ground line below the latter and other traces remain from the frame of the inscription.
Physical DescriptionA beardless male figure wearing a tall conical hat and a long fringed mantle, his right hand raised in salutation, stands left before a taller bearded male figure wearing a round cap with upturned brmi, a kilt and a long fringed mantle, who reaches out his left hand; behind the former stands a supporting goddess. In the sky between the male figures is a sun-disc with crescent between a tiny scorpion and ...; below it a tiny vessel and a human head; below those, a leaf; below that; a beardless male figure, half-kneeling left, apparently wearing a kilt; over the head of the shorter male figure, a bird standing left; behind that bird flying left; below that a scorpion, below which a (nude?) beardless male figure standing left with both hands at his waist. The terminal is neatly divided into two registers by a guilloche bracketed by a line above and below. Above that four beardless (male?) figures, wearing long robes and conjoined at the shoulder, stand left; the leading figure carries a short stick in his hand; the last figure holds his hand upwards; behind him is a tiny ???. The border line below them connects at the left to an upright element, perhaps a human arm (?). Below the guilloche a winged liongriffin attacks a seated lion from behind. Above that, a small throwstick (?). The whole seal is bordered top and bottom by a single line.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene of three figures: Shamash, an utukku, and the priest with pail and sprinkler. Smaller figures of bashtu and the bow-legged dwarf, the latter inverted, serve as a terminal.
Physical DescriptionTwo beardless (male?) figures face one another, each holding up one hand in salutation. In the sky between them, a bird, a "mongoose" below it; in the terminal area, a seated lion holds up one paw over the back of a seated ibex, which turns its head back to the lion; over the lion, a hare; over the ibex, a human hand, a human head, and an eight-pointed star. Behind the hare, a fly.
Physical DescriptionFour male figures stand in two pairs; each pair consists of a man standing right in a long robe in the salutation posture facing a man in a long mantle who holds a harpe-sword (?) down in his left hand. In the sky between the figures, an eight pointed star; below, the crook of Amurru. In one of the pairs, the man standing right seems to carry a staff. A thin ground line runs under the whole scene.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene consisting of four figures; a deity standing left holds up one arm, but is otherwise lost; approaching from the left is an unusual utukku, who wears a long fringed mantle; behind him a lamassu; and behind her another man in an usual garment. A terminal design, which may have consisted of a vertical row of small figures, is almost completely worn away.
Physical DescriptionT U R . B A . A H - . . . A - . . . - M A - . . . Two lamassu face a male figure with no headdress or beard who stands right in salutation posture; at left, a kilted male figure wearing a high conical cap. At the lower end a quarter to a third of the seal is missing.
Physical DescriptionA bearded man grasps a bull by one horn; behind the former, a winged scorpion-man.
Physical DescriptionThe king grasps one foreleg of a monster consisting of a lion with wings and a bearded human head; the latter turns his head left to face an antelope. A crescent occupies the upper field between them.
Physical DescriptionThis seal presents many difficulties. The positioning of the arms of the standing figures at the left of the scene is unusual;they hold one arm downward. The seated figure holds both hands in front of himself, which is also unusual or unheard of. The inscription does not appear to make sense and is inverted. The seal itself is unusually short for its diameter and the hole is unusually wide. See also Garrett 18 and 20, and Balken 76, all very possibly by the same manufacturer.
Physical DescriptionSalutation scene of three figures: utukku, the worshipper, and a lamassu (?). A large lion-headed harpe behind the lamassu serves as a terminal. The carving of the scene is very schematic.
Physical DescriptionDevotional scene; an utukku stands between two lamassu; a god sits l. on a throne with one niche, holding up an implement in his outstretched hand. Before the utukku is an astral symbol; behind him a star, below which is a forked thunderbolt (?). The seated figure is rminiscent of a figure that appears on seals from Mari, holding up a knife or saw like that of Shamash.
Physical DescriptionUtukku stands between two lamassu. Before him, a crescent.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene with three participants: Shamash ascending, a priest with pail and sprinkler, and a king pouring a libation. Traces of an erased inscription of three lines. The carving of the scene appears to have been very fine, but the surface of the seal is now very eroded.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene with three participants: Adad ascending, lamassu, and utukku. The primary figure is smaller than the others and, judging from the style of carving and the grammar of the scene, must be a secondary addition. In the sky between the lamassu and utukku is a nine-pointed star; in the field, a fish.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene with four figures: a figure sits left on a niched throne with a low back holds a cup; before him, a deity ( lamassu?) stands left facing an utukku; between them, a crescent and a spear (?); a final figure standing right in salutation posture.
Physical DescriptionUtukku stands right, facing a lamassu; between them a tall mace.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene of three figures: an uncertain primary figure, utukku and lamassu. The primary figure is apparently a goddess, but she wears a fringed garment.
Physical Description{d} U T U / {d} a - a Š a m a š , A y a Worship scene of three figures: Ishtar ascends left, her right foot resting on the forepart of a lion; she holds a mace-sceptre in her outstretched right hand. Behind her is a priest with sprinkler and bucket; before her a nude female figure.
Physical DescriptionSalutation scene of three figures: Shamash, the worshipper, and utukku. Behind Shamash, a large shepherd's crook; in the sky before him, a crescent, below which a monkey; in the sky behind the worshipper is a vessel(?), below which a ball-and-staff. A ground line runs below the whole scene. The carving is schematic to the point of simplification; Shamash's saw, for example, becomes little more than a stick.
Physical DescriptionIntroduction to the king. The king sits on a high-backed chair rather than the typical royal throne. Both the king and the worshipper wear the fringed garment, while the introducing goddess wears a pleated garment. The back of the king's chair was erased along with an inscription, of which a few traces remain.
Physical DescriptionPerhaps a carnelian (?). Three figures standing; in the upper field, a bird; in the field several uncertain marks. Terminal: a bird l. between borders of scrolls? The carving is extremely crude and rough. The seals appears to be an imitation of a seal very much like Garrett 28. "Uncertain. Unfinished." (Frankfort)
Physical Descriptionu r - {g i š} n a g a r Introduction scene. The primary figure is seated on a simple box-throne; the worshipper does not salute; the garments are extremely simple, distinguished only by a double hem at the bottom. None of the figures bears any kind of distinctive headdress. The inscription is evidently secondary and occupies the narrow field between the worshipper and the introducing figure.
Physical Description{d} [ D U ₃ ] U T U / {d} a - a "Shamash, Aya" Salutation scene: a god holds a harpe-sword in his l. hand, dropped behind his body; before him stands a worshipper with one hand raised in salutation; behind the latter stands a figure, possibly kilted, holding a staff before his body.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene of three large figures and one smaller one; a god (?) stands left, his right arm held downwards; in the sky a crescent, at his feet an uncertain device; before him stands an utukku behind whom stands the nude female figure, followed by a small nude male figure. Above the last is a human-headed goat-fish.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene of three figures; a male (?) figure wearing a long skirt stands left before an utukku; between them a crescent and the crook of Amurru; behind the utukku stands the nude female figure; between them, a ball-and-staff below a ...
Physical DescriptionA male figure stands left in salutation pose; he is approached by another male figure, perhaps nude, apparently carrying something on his shoulders; behind him, a third figure, half kneeling and holding his right arm up behind his head.
Physical DescriptionA seated figure drinks through a straw from a vessel placed at his feet; the straw is held by an attendant; behind the seated figure is another attendant. In the terminal space are two circles with center dots and wedge. The seal is bordered by a line at the top and the bottom; the whole scene is divided by four vertical dividing lines.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene: three worshippers approach a statue of a bull with a protrusion on its back; below the bull is a dividing line below which is an uncertain design (similar seals have a scorpion in this location). In the sky between the first two worshippers, a small crescent; a snake (?) serves as terminal
Physical DescriptionA human figure and an antelope approach a double-headed eagle; to the left of the latter is an inverted worshipper, before whom an inverted bird (?) Three irregular pellets occupy the field around the eagle.
Physical DescriptionTwo stick figures with drill-hole heads stand with their arms raised, a scorpion and a drill hole between them; as a terminal, an inverted stick figure with drill-hole head, three more drill holes, and a small circle with a cross inside. Linear borders.
Physical DescriptionReversed presentation scene. The primary figure sits on a simple throne; both figures before him appear to be worshippers, both have hair and salute with their right hand while holding the left to the waist. In the upper field before the primary figure is a large, shallow crescent, below which is an uncertain form apparently representing an offering stand or a table. In the lower field between the worshippers is a six-pointed star. A staff or standard with a star or cross at the top serves as a terminal.
Physical DescriptionContest scene. The seal is missing, but an old broken laquer impression gives a good indication of what the seal looked like.
Physical Description1 item
Two winged genii advance right; in the lower fields between them a plant and three uncertain marks. One of the genii has four wings, and raises his hands on either side of his body; the other has three wings and only one arm, which he raises before his body.
Physical DescriptionA continuous frieze of animals consisting of two antelopes (with curling horns) and one animal with a long tail and no horns (a lion?).
Physical DescriptionA bearded priest with long hair stands facing right before an altar surmounted by a crescent; on either side of the altar stands a divine emblem; in the upper field before the priest is a radiant star; in the field behind him is a winged sun disk; below which a rhomb and a fish. Line borders at both ends of the seal.
Physical DescriptionAn antelope, a fish r. over a scorpion l. over a rhomb., and a large design that might represent an insect? Line borders at top and bottom, and a few stray marks in the field. cf. Balken 33
Physical DescriptionContest scene of master-of-animals variety: a bearded man grasps one foreleg of each of two gazelles, both of which face away from him; in the upper field between them, a star with eight rays.
Physical DescriptionA bearded man grasps one foreleg of an erect antelope which faces left, away from him. A crescent, lozenge and fish occupy the field behind them.
Physical DescriptionBead shaped. A bearded man grasps a gazelle by one horn.
Physical DescriptionDevotional scene: Shamash ascends l. holding a saw; before him a man stands in the posture of an utukku, though without a mace. Behind the latter stands a nude female figure.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene involving four figures; the primary figure is a kilted god(?) holding a mace in his left hand and an axe in his right; before him stands "the Syrian woman" and a lion-demon; behind the primary figure is an attendant figure in a fringed garment, whose head is lost to a chip.
Physical DescriptionA god seated left holds a wedge in his outstretched hand, behind him a lion-headed harpe-sword, in the sky, a fish; before him a goddess wearing a pleated garment stands left holding a crescent-standard facing a worshipper, who is almost completely lost to two large chips. In the lower field before him is a small figure of "the bow-legged dwarf" apparently holding a spear.

Physical Description5 items
Two lions attack a horned animal; human figures (probably lahmu) attack each of the lions from behind, apparently stabbing them with daggers. At the right human figure with a tail (possibly kusarikku) stands left holding a standard. Before the right lion, a plant; before the other, an uncertain device.
Physical DescriptionContest scene: two man-headed bulls stand crossed with one another; the further of the two is attacked from the right by a rampant lion, its head shown as if from above; the lion is in turn attacked by a kusarikku. To the left an antelope standing left, its head back, is attacked by a panther which is in turned attacked by a man wearing a long robe who holds an axe in his right hand. The seal is beautifully carved and the style is superficially convincing. A number of details, however, are poorly understood by the seal carver. In particular the man-headed bulls are problematic. Strictly speaking, man-headed bulls do not occur on the seals of the Akkad period. Bison, however, are common on genuine seals throughout that period. Relatively early in the period, the bison is typically shown with its head shown frontally, and bearing almost human features (as on Princeton Art Museum 70-26 and Garrett 3, shown below). Later in the period the bison's head is shown in profile, as on Balken 15. Note that on Garrett 3 the bison has two horns, as we would expect on a bison; but on Garrett 2 they wear an elaborate headdress apparently intended as that worn by gods, featuring multiple tiers of horns, though poorly understood here. The headdress intended by the seal carver was common from the late Akkad period through the Old Babylonian, but it should not appear on a bison. The kusarikku on this seal wears the same headdress; indeed the heads of the bison and of the kusarikku are indistinguishable. The kusarikku may wear such a headdress on seals, but not before the Old Babylonian period (see Pyne 42).
Physical Descriptionb u - n a - u m / d u b - s a r "Buna'um, the scribe" Contest scene consiting of six figures; near the center is a bearded human figure wearing an unusual headdress and kilt, standing left with his face shown frontally; he holds his arms around two bison, the right one with his head turned right, the other with his face shown frontally; the right bison is attacked by a lion, while the other stands back-to-back with another bison, shown symmetrically, which is held by a lahmu. Behind the lahmu a small kilted god stands right holding a staff; above him is the inscription. The central figure is directly comparable only to a figure on a seal formerly in the Moore Collection, also lapis lazuli (Eisen 20, Forte 45, Sotheby's 26). On that seal the figure is shown as here, with the same fez-like headdress and the same fringed kilt. The two seals are clearly not by the same maker; in comparison, the carving of the Moore seal is clumsy, and its figures lack the impressive muscular definition of the Garrett seal.
Physical DescriptionContest scene involving eight figures. At the right are two lions, each held by a lahmu who grasps one of the lions' hind legs and rests his own foot on the lion's neck. To the left, a bison is held by a bearded human figure wearing a kilt and a fez-like headdress; behind the latter is a god who holds another figure, perhaps a bison or more likely a kusarikku, in similar fashion. The proportions of the figures are in many places rather irregular; note in particular the left lahmu, whose head seems unusually small and whose left leg is completely out of proportion to the rest of his body.
Physical DescriptionA large bull recumbent l. with a winged altar on his back; before him sits a male figure wearing a fringed garment who appears to hold the bull's horns; behind the bull is a nude male figure who half-kneels, one foot on the bull's back, holding the altar with his hands. In the sky before the seated figure is a crescent. This type of scene is well known throughout the Akkad period; see Boehmer Abb. 593-619. This particular example, though wear obscures the design somewhat, apparently belongs to the Akkad III group.
Physical DescriptionIntroduction scene; four standing deities approach a deity seated r. Plants grow from the primary figure's shoulders; the primary figure wears a flounced garment, all the standing ones wear pleated garments. The details of all figures are obscured by the poor condition of the material.
Physical Description{d} U T U . K A R Presentation scene: A goddess sits l. on a single-niched throne; before her stands a worshipper, behind her an attendant. The worshipper seems to hold both hands out, but one such 'arm' is more likely folds on his garment. The attendant seems to carry a palm frond. Looks a little suspicious.
Physical DescriptionUninscribed; an inscription has probably been erased. Introduction scene. The primary figure wears a flounced garment, but all other details are lost due to the condition of the material. Before the primary figure is an uncertain symbol; behind the introducing goddess is a ball-staff below a comb. In the terminal space, which probably once held an inscription, two figures stand on a ground line over a large dog standing r. The two figures are probably a lahmu half-kneeling r. facing a kusarikku standing l. holding a standard.
Physical DescriptionA N . T I / I B . G I Š ? / l u ₂ - {d} e n - l i l ₂ - l a ₂ Introduction to a seated god who, like the introducing goddess, wears a flounced garment. In the sky, a crescent; at the primary figure's knees, a bird stands r. The seal is rather worn and has been recarved somewhat; the bird in the field is probably also secondary. The inscription is well carved in the manner of seals of the Ur III dynasty but does not appear to make sense, other than the last line which is a common personal name meaning 'man of Enlil.'

In the sky is a crescent; in the field a staff, a ball-staff and a comb. Terminal in two registers: above, a dog sits l. with lion-headed harpe behind him, the inscription before him; below, a dog stands l. Goetze doubted the authenticity of this seal. Though some details have evidently been recarved, such as the faces and garments of the figures, the seal is probably genuine.
Physical Description{d} U T U Contest of two symmetrical pairs, each consisting of a kusarikku fighting a human-faced bison. The latter are arranged in the center of the scene, their bodies facing away from one another, their heads side-by-side shown frontally. Between them is an ornamental mace-standard; in the space before the bison are a ball-staff and comb. The inscription serves as a terminal but is not enclosed in a frame.
Physical Description{d} n i n - š u b u r / s u k k a l a n - n a ! The last sign of the inscription is completely bungled, allowing Goetze's interpretation "sukkal of Inanna". This title is not known to the author, however, while "vizier of heaven" is a well-known title of Ninshubur. Libation scene consiting of three figures: Shamash ascends l. wearing an open pleated robe, his foot resting on a simple box-like object, and carrying his saw in his r. hand. Before him a man wearing a fringed garment stands pouring a libation from a cup; behind him stands another man in the posture characteristic of an audience.
Physical DescriptionDevotional scene consiting of three figures: at l., a nude female figure shown frontally but her head turned r. toward the other two, who stand facing one another; in the center a kilted man stands in the posture of an utukku, facing another figure, probably a god, wearing a pleated garment. He appears to hold something in his hand, but this is more probably a 'fly' in the field. Above this is a crescent. In the terminal space are two or more abraded symbols, probably a bow-legged dwarf and another figure above it as well as a standard of some kind. These have perhaps been erased in preparation for an inscription.

T U Devotional scenes; a god standing l. is judging from his posture and a possible saw held in his r. hand, the sun god; before him stands a figure holding an animal as an offering, behind whom stands another deity. All three figures wear the flounced garment of gods, but the central figure is apparently the king, who is normally shown in this posture. A second scene shows an utukku facing a lamassu. A ground line runs under the whole scene. The inscription is interspersed in three separate lines through the scene. This leaves two spaces between the figures which are fileld with a ball-staff below a comb and a human head over a fly.

Devotional scene (salutation): the worshipper stands r. with one hand held before his face before an ascending god who wears an open pleated robe and a square headdress. He holds a crook in each hand and rests his r. foot on a small horned animal. The primary figure may be identified as Amurru, god of the Ammorites. The hole is filled with wax.
Physical DescriptionInscription (bungled). Utukku and lamassu stand facing one another. The seal, if genuine at all, has been completely recarved, probably by the manufacturer of Garrett 20, Balken 76, and Pyne 56.

Physical DescriptionInscribed in five lines. A male worshipper stands r. in salutation posture; in the field before him are two symbols, and another two encased in the last line of the inscription.
Physical DescriptionA jumble of various motifs drawn from a wide range of Mesopotamian glyptic; the main scene seems to be a worship scene, with a worshipper standing before a seated deity whose throne rests on the back of a lion crouching left, behind which is another lion crouching right. The worshipepr stands on the head of a sphinx crouching right. As a terminal, two antelopes rear up against a tree, over which is a star. In the field are two birds, a scorpion, a crescent, and an unusual figure, apparently a pazuzu, standing on a pedestal and holding an animal by the feet in each hand. The upper edge of the seal has an elaborate guilloche-like border; the lower edge has a border of four lines.
Physical DescriptionHerding scene? A herdsman stands r. flanked by two horned animals that stand facing him; behind the l. animal is another figure, human but for a tail, who holds a vase out in both arms; in the field is a fish, a bucranium above it. Linear borders.
Physical DescriptionDevotional scene: two 'king' figures stand facing one another, a lamassu standing r. between them. The l. 'king' holds his arms in salutation posture, the other salutes with one hand while in the other carrying a rabbit which hangs head-downward before him. A terminal in two registers divided by a guilloche between linear borders; upper register: a bird-demon half-kneels r. holding in each hand the tail of a goat which tries to escape; both goats turn their heads back toward the demon. Lower register: two lions sit facing one another, holding up one paw as if in greeting.
Physical DescriptionTwo registers: the lower one shows a devotional scene, the upper one shows heraldic motifs that appear to be decorative in nature. Lower register: a god with short hair and no beard sits r. on a two-niched throne, holding an axe over his r. shoulder and holding the other hand out. He wears a flounced garment. Before him is a recumbent bull recumbent l. on whose back stands the female figure who raises her skirt. In the field are a bird, a star, and two uncertain motifs. Terminal: two kusarikku stand facing one another, their faces shown frontally, holding a spear between themselves with both hands. Upper register: two recumbent sphinxes face one another, a star between them and a crescent over each's back; behind them an antelope recumbent l. with its head turned back; over its back another star.
Physical DescriptionDevotional scene: a god who is nude except for a double belt stands r. holding a filetl (?) in his outstretched l. hand. Before him stands a 'king' figure, wearing a mantle with rolled hems, a kilt and a rounded headdress. He holds a plant motif in his outstretched r. hand. Between these figures is an offering stand, above which an astral symbol. Behind the 'king' is a male worshipper wearing a fringe garment and short hair, no beard, holding a trident in his outstretched hand. Terminal in two registers: above, an antelope recumbent l. with one of its forelegs raised; below, a hare crouches l. A guilloche between linear borders divides the registers of the terminal; linear borders at both ends of the seal.
Physical DescriptionDevotional scene; a worshipper in audience posture stands r. before the storm god who wears a kilt and the crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt; he holds in his r. hand a thunderbolt and in the other an axe. Behind him is a smaller kilted figure. Behind the latter is an uncertain animal, above which two horned animals crouching l. in the field, two ankhs, a bucranium and a crescent or throwstick. Linear borders.
Physical DescriptionDevotional scene. Three figures, left to right: a worshipper holding a palm frond stands r.; before him two figures, a man wearing an open pleated robe who strides r. holding a doubled staff, and a man wearing the dress of the 'king' but no headdress, also holding a staff, stand facing one another; between them is a tall stylized tree motif. Terminal: a large game bird or vulture flies l. between two plants; above and below, short scroll motifs set off with single lines. Linear borders.
Physical DescriptionTwo figures, both wearing kilts and the royal headdress of Upper and Lower Egypt, stand facing one another, each raising one hand to a tall stylized plant and holding a crook or plant motif in the other hand. Terminal: a lion pounces l. on the back of a hare running l. Above, a scorpion. Linear borders.
Physical DescriptionContest scenes. Two male figures wearing rounded headdresses and open robes fight a lion; the r. figure holds the lion by its jaw and one foreleg while the other pulls its nose and tail while resting one foot on the lion's legs. This design is then repeated, the only difference being that the r. figure now holds a harpe at his side rather than holding the lion's foreleg.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene; Adad stands r. on a recumbent bull, holding an axe; before him is a worshipper who holds out both hands. Behind Adad is a bird-demon. In the upper field is a crescent and seven dots (the Pleiades), a star and several stray wedges. Terminal: marru and stylus. Linear borders.
Physical DescriptionWorship scene; a god sits l. on a throne placed on the back of a dog or lion; before him a worshipper stands r. holding out both hands. Between the figures is a table on which rests an uncertain device, perhaps an offered animal. Over this is a winged sundisk. In the field, a crescent, a balance, and a rhomb. Linear borders.
Physical DescriptionContest scene: a winged genii fights a large bird, which appears to have the body and tail of a fish.
Physical DescriptionMaster of animals scene; a man wearing an open robe stands l. holding the forelegs of two demons, each a winged lion with human head; in the field, rhombs. Terminal: a bull recumbent l. with a fish l. below it, a pellet and a crescent between them. Fake?

Physical DescriptionRing-shaped. Inscribed in Pahlevi. A hump-backed bull recumbent r.
Physical DescriptionGable shaped. A stag stands r. with his head turned back; behind him, the forepart of another animal, probably a doe, in the same posture. The design appears to be incomplete, as if it was intended to show both the stag and a complete doe; but from the orientation of the gabled back it does not appear that the seal is broken.
Physical DescriptionGable shaped. A horned quadruped standing l.; above and before it, plant motifs; another uncertain motif below it.
Physical DescriptionA fawn crouching r.; above it, a plant motif.

Banquet scene; two figures sit on 'camp stools' facing one another; the l. figure seems to hold up a cup while the other figure reaches one hand towards the other's knee. In the sky between them, a crescent. Behind each figure stands an attendant with arms folded; as a terminal behind the latter is a standard.
Physical DescriptionIntroduction to goddess on two-niched throne on dais; in the sky, a crescent; in the field before the primary figure, a scorpion. The terminal space, reserved for an inscription, has been filled with a bull crouching l. above which is a mongoose (?) l. and a tortoise (?).
Physical DescriptionIntroduction scene; the primary figure is a goddess wearing a flounced garment and seated on a single-niched throne placed on a dais; the introducing figure is a goddess wearing a pleated garment; the worshipper wears a fringed garment. In the sky between the goddesses is a crescent. The seal originally bore an inscription which has been erased and replaced with a scorpion, a large standing bird and an uncertain motif.
Physical DescriptionDevotional scene in two groups of two figures each; right to left: a god wearing an open robe ascends l. facing a 'king' holding an offering, probably an animal such as a goat, in his arms; in the sky before the ascending god is an astral symbol. A god stands l. holding a harpe in his l. hand which hangs behind his back; he faces another male figure, probably an utukku variant (no mace, unusual clothing, pointed headdress). Physical Description{d} š a m a š / {d} a y a Introduction to the "king" (?) who wears a pleated garment; in the sky, a crescent. In the lower field before the worshiper is a star. The introducing figure appears to be a woman rather than a goddess, as she lacks the usual horned headdress; her garment is also unusual. The "king" does not wear his usual headdress; both he and the worshiper appear to have hair.
Physical DescriptionPresentation scene. The primary figure wears the flounced garment and sits on a royal throne, and carries a cup in his outstretched right hand. The introducing figure also wears the flounced garment, though his head is obscured by a large chip that removes most of the field between him and the primary figure, similar seals show a deity in this position. He clearly salutes with his left hand, but his right is obscure, as is typical on such seals. The treatment of the bottom hem of the introducing figure's garment is unique; it seems to extend to the back and then curve upwards, forming whatl ooks rather like a scorpion's tail; but this is probably just the fringe of the worshipper's garment. The worshipper wears the fringed garment; he salutes with his right hand while holding the left to his waist. Both the worshipper and the primary figure have a large striated half-disk of hair on their heads. As a terminal behind the primary figure is a satatue of a bull (on this seal it looks more like a ram, but comparable seals have a bull) with a protrusion on its back (see also Pyne 75); it stands over a ground line, below which is a scorpion.
Physical DescriptionA large eagle grasps the hinds of two gazelles, one in each talon.
Physical DescriptionSlightly concave shape. Presentation scene. A large god in a fringed garment sits on a two-niched throne with a tall back, which curls over at the top; he holds a vessel in his outstretched right hand, from which water streams. Two small male worshippers approach him, the first apparently holding a vessel in each hand, in one of which he catches the water flowing from the primary figure's vessel. The second figure carries a stick in his outstretched left hand. In the sky before the primary figure is a large astral symbol consisting of a crescent and a sun-disk; this is flanked on the left by a lahmu (?) and on the right by an erect bull (?). The terminal area is divided into two registers by a rope-like line enclosed by a thin line; above this, a seated gazelle (?), a seated lion, and a squatting female figure probably holding her garment up with her hands; below the divider are two registers each fo three recumbent quadrupeds, apparently lions or dogs, all facing right, below which a register of five human heads, also facing right.
Physical DescriptionContest scene consiting of four figures in two groups. On the left, the lahmu fights a bull, the latter's head turned away from him; on the right, kusarikku fights a lion.

Worship scene; the primary figure is male, and wears a triangular cap that may be a stylized rendering of the rounded cap with upturned brim; he wears a long gown and stands with his right hand outstretched towards another male figure, in the posture of the utukku; in the sky between them, a star; an uncertain device between their legs may be an animal on whose back the primary figure rests one foot, but this seems unlikely. The line that connects the star to the second male figure's arm is probably a flaw in the stone rather than part of the seal's design. Behind the second male figure is a nude female, her hands at her breasts; she also appears to wear a triangular headdress. In the terminal space, a 'bow legged dwarf', a crescent above.
Physical DescriptionSalutation scene. The primary figure sits on a simple box throne. Both the latter and the single figure before him appear to have horned headdress. In the lower field between them is a schematic table. An irregular linear form, perhaps representing a door, serves as a terminal in the space behind them.

Physical DescriptionWorship scene; the primary figure is the weather god Adad, standing on the back of a bull advancing left; in his outstretched right hand he holds a forked thunderbolt. Before him stands an uncertain deity, probably a lamassu; she faces the utukku; behind him stands another figure, probably the priest with sprinkler and pail. A tall standard with a triangular top serves as a terminal. Before the priest is another forked thunderbolt; before the utukku is an uncertain device.

Physical DescriptionUncertain traces of an inscription. Introduction scene. The primary figure holds a cup, and seems to wear a flounced garment and sits on a simple throne with an animal's head extension at the rear (?). The worshiper seems to have hair. There is a ground line below the whole scene.
Physical DescriptionInscription in four lines, severely abraded; Utukku stands right before a lamassu; between them a 'bow-legged dwarf' and perhaps a crescent; behind the lamassu are traces of a tall device like a standard.

Physical DescriptionTwo deep diagonal gouges between thinner border lines; a series of smaller marks between them.
Physical DescriptionInscribed; illegible. Two-participant contest scene; apparently a kusarikku fights a lion. Behind the latter are traces of a very abraded inscription; latter is probably secondary, replacing a second protagonist ( lahmu) which was erased when the inscription was carved.
Physical DescriptionBroken. Four line inscription. Two figures in long robes stand facing one another; behind the figure at the left, a long device such as a harpe-sword. The top part of the seal, probably almost half of the seal, is missing.
Physical DescriptionA seated figure drinks through a straw; one or two indistinct human figures before him. A crescent is visible in the sky; a small quadruped at his feet, another perhaps in the sky. The seal is very worn and the design is confused; it is hard to interpret since I have not seen anything quite like it.
Physical DescriptionA male worshiper stands before another figure which is, judging from the posture, an utukku; in the terminal space behind them, a lion attacks a standing ibex; above the lion, a goat and a fish; above the ibex, a "bow-legged dwarf."
Physical DescriptionA bearded figure wearing a long robe sits on a raised chair and holds a cup in his right hand; before him, a table laden with victuals (?); to the left of the table stands an attendant holding a fan and a stole. Over the table is a small crescent. As a terminal in the space behind both figures are four long wedges surrounding a stylized marru below a seven-pointed star.
Physical DescriptionContest scene, composed of five symmetrically arranged figures. In the center, a nude male figure facing right and pulling a bull away from an attacking lion; behind him, another bull also attacked by a lion.
Physical Descriptionš u - {d} a d a d d u m u a - d u - n i Salutation of a goddess seated on a simple box throne; crescent above.
Physical DescriptionA human figure leads or follows two animals. The animal before the figure appears to be a bull; the one before that appears to be a lion or a panther. Several uncertain markings fill the field; that over the bull is perhaps a bird, but the traces are not clear enough to be sure.
Physical DescriptionContest scene. A nude male figure holds up two beasts, apparently both bulls, in the master-of-animals pose. To the left of this group stands another human figure, apparently holding a staff or standard. An irregular shape (damage?) occupies the space before/below the animal at the right.
Physical DescriptionSalutation scene; the primary figure, seated on a schematic architectural throne, has an uncertain headdress probably representing hair, and no horns to indicate divinity. It is also unclear whether there is a beard. The worshiper, in a fringed garment, stands directly before the primary figure. In the field above them is a crescent, and in the field behind them a date-palm altar serves as a terminal.
Physical DescriptionIntroduction to a goddess seated on a simple throne, a spouted vessel at her knees, a crescent above. Both the primary figure and the introducing figure (a goddess) wear the flounced garment. In the terminal space, a bird standing facing left with its head turned backwards (?); below it, a scorpion. The scene is crudely carved.
Physical DescriptionIntroduction scene: Before the primary figure stand four figures, all apparently male?; the first salutes with his left hand, his right hand is missing. The second holds his left hand to his chest while leading the third figure's left hand with his right. The third figure holds his right hand to his chest; the final figure holds both hands to his chest. All five figures wear the flounced garment. A few marks in the upper field around the primary figure suggest that the latter may have some attributes, such as plants or flames emanating from his shoulders, but these are now indistinct.
Physical DescriptionA winged male figure wearing a short kilt and a high conical cap stands l. before a male figure seated on a 'camp stool', a table or offering stand between them. Behind them two sphinxes bracket a kneeling gazelle, its head turned right; a winged sun-disk (?) above.
Physical DescriptionTwo standing figures wearing long robes face one another; between them, a vessel in a stand; the figure on the right holds a bow (and a cup?), the figure on the left holds a fan. A plant below a crescent fills the space behind them.
