Overview and metadata sections
Alison Frantz was a classicist and photographer. She was the photographer and specialist in Early Christian and Byzantine archaeology for the Agora excavations at Athens from 1933 to 1968 for the American School of Classical Studies. In 1967 she received a grant from the American Philosophical Society to study, draw and photograph the temple ruins (circa 200-300 A.D.) on the island of Sikinos in the Aegean Sea. Frantz also served as Cultural Attache (1946-1949) for the U.S. Embassy in Athens and later was a visiting member at the Institute for Advanced Study.
Consists of papers of Alison Frantz, a classicist and photographer. She was the photographer and specialist in Early Christian and Byzantine archaeology for the Agora excavations at Athens from 1933 to 1968 for the American School of Classical Studies. In 1967 she received a grant from the American Philosophical Society to study, draw and photograph the temple ruins (circa 200-300 A.D.) on the island of Silinos in the Aegean Sea. Frantz also served as Cultural Attache (1946-1949) for the U.S. Embassy in Athens and later was a visiting member at the Institute for Advanced Study. Included in the papers are hundreds of black and white photographs of different sizes of classical and Byzantine architecture, sculpture, monuments, ornamental motifs, inscriptions and artifacts primarily of the Agora excavations in Athens, and Greece, but also documenting her work at various other sites in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. There are also photographs of vernacular architecture, scenes of daily life, and of manuscripts at the Megaspelaion Monastery, which were later destroyed in a fire. Also present are drawings, sketches, notecards, notecards with photographs, photo study cards, notebooks, and negative files relating to her studies of the Agora excavations, sculpture and other sites in Turkey, Greece, the Peloponnese and elsewhere.
The papers also contain student notes, lectures, book reviews, and articles by Frantz, such as "The Crusaders in Greece," "Multum in Parvo, the Aegean Island of Sikinos," many articles and notes concerning the post-classical habitation of the Athenian Agora, and "Geography and Politics in Early Christian Ornament in Greece," written for a festschrift for Kurt Weitzmann. A correspondence file includes personal and professional correspondents such as The American Philosophical Society, The Archaeological Institute of American, Rhys Carpenter, Peter Megaw, Smith College, Homer Thompson, John Travlos, Harper & Row, the Phaidon Press, and letters (1925-1948) to her mother, Mary K. Frantz. In addition there are personal photographs of herself, family, friends and pets, documents, medals, printed matter, and a volume of genealogical information entitled "Our Family."
Organized into the following series:
The collection is the result of a gift from Alison Frantz in 1994 and subsequent bequests from her estate in 1995 and 1996. Additions are a gift of Dimitri Gondicas in 2002.

This material reflects the early interests and coursework of Frantz while a student. Most of the notebooks likely date to her years as an undergraduate at Smith College. Others are apparently to be associated with her graduate work at Columbia University.

Drafts, notes, drawings, photographs and correspondence that reflect Frantz's continued interest in the Agora excavations in Athens from the 1930s until her publication of The Athenian Agora 24: Late Antiquity: 267-700 (ASCS, Princeton, 1988). Much of this material deals with the post-Classical habitation of the site.

Of particular interest from these notecards are the series of ornamental motifs that were collected by Frantz in the 1920s and 1930s and which apparently functioned as tools for her extensive study of Byzantine ornamentation, the subject of her dissertation. Boxes 14 and 15 contain notecards that detail individual coins, from Late Antiquity to Modern, found in the Agora excavation.

Documentation of post-classical architectural sculpture from the Agora excavations in Athens. Notecards contain detailed notes and measurements of individual carved architectural members. Many are accompanied by one or more photographs, apparently taken by Frantz while she was photographer of the excavations. (Negatives are generally not in the collection but may be found in the archives at the Agora.) Arranged by type of architectural member:

Folders 1-5 contain the pages from two loose-leaf binders containing photographs of architectural sculpture. Much of this material is repeated in boxes 19-22, but it is included here since it reflects an arrangement of data as organized by Frantz, presumably reflecting her ideas about appropriate comparanda for the Agora material from amongst the general body of architectural sculpture, in Greece and the Balkans. Folders 1 and 2 comprise a single notebook, as do folders 4 and 5.

Containing bibliography and notes relating to architectural sculpture from various sites, as well as three notebooks from island trips to Sikinos, Paros, Amorgos, and Thasos. The notebook from Sikinos, 1967, is copiously illustrated with photographs (negative numbers indicate that they may be found in the collection of photographs of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens) and notes, relating to the Hereon, later converted into a Christian church, which she published together with Homer Thompson and John Travlos in the American Journal of Archaeology, vol. 73 (1969).

The collection of small and large photographs represent Frantz's efforts from 1938 to 1984 to document the sites which she visited throughout Europe, with primary emphasis on Greece. The bulk of this material is archaeological in nature, with ancient and medieval sites always the focus of her interests. Vernacular architecture and scenes of daily life are also documented. A majority of the photographs have corresponding negatives in the collection. These can be identified by the existence of a negative number on the back of the photograph. A negative number which contains a letter followed by a single number (as, for example, A-2) indicates a large format negative, located in boxes 49 and 50. A negative number containing a series of four numbers (as, for example, 62-3.1-33) indicates a 35-mm negative, located in box 51. Of the latter, the date of the photograph can be ascertained by the first number in the series. (For example, a negative number starting with 75 would indicate that the photograph was taken in 1975.) In cases where no number appears on the back of a photograph, no negative has been found. The photographs in this collection were all taken by Frantz with the following exceptions: Those of Anaphi were taken by R.A. McNeal, those of Skopelos were taken in 1972 by George Miles, and a number of photographs from Thasos were taken by J.P. Sodini.
Note: photographs & negatives of manuscripts at Megaspelaion can be found in boxes 16, 33, 49 and 68.
Small and Large Photographs arranged primarily by place name. (Small photographs go up to 31/2″ x 51/2″ in size, large photographs go up to 8″ x 10″ in size.)

Contains Frantz's collection of study notecards with photographic documentation of miscellaneous archaeological sites in Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, and North Africa. The arrangement of notecards follows Frantz's organization of the material: box 44 contains archaeological sites in Turkey and North Africa, followed by a collection of architectural sculpture from sites in Bulgaria, Italy, Roumania, Yugoslavia, Turkey and North Africa. Box 45 contains notecards with architectural sculpture found in mainland Greece, while box 46 contains notecards which record architectural sculpture from the Peloponnese and the Islands. All materials are arranged alphabetically by site. Negative numbers are often given (following the system as described above for the small photographs). The cards do not contain any notes, but are limited to the visual information as conveyed by the photograph. The photographs are a combination of Frantz's own travels and photographs taken from publications. Much of this material is repeated in the collection of small photographs.
Arranged alphabetically by site.

These three albums contain the earliest of the photographic materials from the collection that document Frantz's youth in Princeton as well as her first trip to Europe and Greece. Many have corresponding negatives which are housed in the collection. Where these exist they have been marked (in pencil) either immediately next to or in the frame of the photograph. It is important to note that a number of the earliest photographs from Princeton, especially those in box 57, certainly have corresponding negatives in the collection (neg. nos. AA1-50 and BB1-37) which have not yet been identified.
