Overview and metadata sections

Garrett

George Garrett was a repected American poet and novelist. A member of the Princeton class of 1952, Garrett taught at various institutions, including Wesleyan University, Hollins College, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the University of South Carolina, prior to being named Henry Hoyns Professor of English at the University of Virginia, a position he held until his retirement in 1999. Garrett was the poet-laureate of Virginia from 2002 until 2006. He died in 2008.

The collection contains three early holograph drafts and galleys of Which Ones are the Enemy?, a novel published by Garrett (Princeton Class of 1952) in 1961. Also present are galleys for Finished Man (1959); Xerox copies of the typescripts of Do Lord Remember Me (1965) and Entered from the Sun (1990); galleys, page proofs, and typescripts for various articles, stories, plays, and poems; cassettes of Garrett reading from his Death of the Fox, and Enchanted Ground; and an interview with him. There are also journals, paperback books, and offprints containing articles, stories, or poems either edited or written by Garrett.

In addition there is a file of correspondence of Garrett with James B. Meriwether with clippings and other printed matter about various works by Garrett. Also present are correspondence, galleys, and other papers relating to Meriwether's edition of William Faulkner's Father Abraham (1983).
