Overview and metadata sections
Great-grandson of the noted English poet Coventry Patmore, Derek Patmore was not only a poet but also a journalist, translator, and writer on interior decoration.
The collection consists of selected papers of Patmore. Included are typescripts for The Feverish Interlude, published as Private History: An Autobiography (1960); The Star and the Crescent: An Anthology of Modern Turkish Poetry (1946), chosen and translated by Patmore, with a few translations by Lord Dunsany; and Aegean Interlude: Pages from a Greek Journal, 1945-1946, an unpublished book. Also present are manuscripts for a poem and two articles, and a commonplace book (1929-1931) containing notes on interviews with Michael Arlen, Rosita Forbes, Rebeccca West, W. B. Maxwell, Paul Robeson, Tallulah Bankhead, Cecil Beaton, and others.
The manuscripts were published as Private History: An Autobiography (London: J. Cape, 1960) and The Star and the Crescent: An Anthology of Modern Turkish Poetry (London: Constable & Co., 1946)
Purchased from Phoros Books in 1992 (AM1992-129).
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
