Overview and metadata sections
Born in Germany, Albert Einstein was a noted physicist and winner of the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics. Hanna Fantova, a former Princeton University librarian, became a close friend of Einstein.
The collection consists of Fantova's collection of Albert Einstein material, as well as some of her own personal papers. Included are 28 letters and 15 poems (all in German) from the late 1940s by Einstein to her; Fantova's "Gespräche mit Einstein" ("Conversations with Einstein") manuscript; and 57 undated (mostly black-and-white) photographs of Einstein, and a few other unidentified people and places, most of which were taken later in life. Also present are photostatic copies of several Einstein manuscripts in German, "Zur Einheitlichen Feldtheorie" (incomplete), "Die Struktur des Continuum," and miscellaneous fragments and letters; a poem, "Tiger an Hanne" (1945), by Margot Einstein; and correspondence (1957-1958) between Hanna Fantova and Leo Perlman about Einstein's estate.
Fantova correspondence and Einstein photographs and photostats were the gift of Johanna Fanta Fantova in 1956 and bequest of her estate in 1981; Einstein letters and poems were the gift of Gillett Griffin in 1992. Some materials were transfered to the Special Collections from the Mudd Manuscript Library in 2004.
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
