Overview and metadata sections

Haskins, Charles Homer, 1870-1937

An American historian, Haskins taught at Johns Hopkins (1889-1892), Wisconsin (1892-1902), and Harvard (1902-1931). He was a leading medievalist of his generation and a prominent member of the group of presidential advisers known as "The Inquiry," 1917. As delegate to the Paris Peace Conference, 1918-1919, Haskins advanced the solution eventually adopted for the Saar.

The collection consists of selected papers of Haskins reflecting his academic career and government appointments. Included are correspondence files concerning his membership on and participation in the Edward M. House Commission to Prepare Data for the Peace Conference ("The Inquiry," 1917-1918), the American Commission to Negotiate Peace, of which Haskins was chief of the Division of Western Europe (1918), and the Versailles Peace Conference (1919).

Also present are articles, lectures, notes, and an extensive collection of printed matter relating to Haskins' studies in medieval history, including correspondence and related papers of the American Historical Association (president, 1922), the Medieval Academy of America (president, 1926-1927), and Harvard University (professor, 1902-1931). In addition, there are papers of George Lee Haskins, Charles Allen Haskins, and other family members, and appointment books, documents, maps, and photographs.

An additional accession consists of two typed articles (with holograph corrections) by Josiah Cox Russell--"The Social Significance of the Order of Charter Witnesses in 13th Century England" (New Mexico Normal University, 39 pp.) and "Thirteenth Century Anglo-Norman Writers" (New Mexico Normal University, 23 pp.)--with an accompanying letter to Prof. Haskins dated March 15, 1930.

Gift of Prof. George L. Haskins and Mrs. Charles H. Haskins. Some Material transferred from Mudd Library.
