Overview and metadata sections
Thomas Baird, a member of the Princeton Class of 1945, collected materials relating to Mayan women.
Consists of the working and personal papers of Thomas Baird. The papers primarily contain draft and final manuscripts of Baird's published works, such as: Triumphal Entry (1962), The Old Masters (1963), People Who Pull You Down (1970), The Way to the Old Sailors Home (1977), Poor Millie (1978), Villa Aphrodite (1984) and Smart Rats (1990) [young adult]. Also included are notes, writing journals, correspondence between Baird and his publishers and editors, fan mail, and reviews. There is also a selection of manuscripts and related material for Baird's unpublished works, ideas and notes for planned works, literature reviews by Baird, as well as manuscripts and notes from talks, addresses and lectures given by Baird.
The other correspondence contained in the collection includes general letters, family letters and travel related letters from Canada, Mexico and Wyoming. There is also a variety of Baird's personal writings that include notes, diaries and journals from 1944 to 1990.
Other materials included in the collection consist of the transcript of an interview with Baird for the National Gallery of Art Oral History Program in 1989, publishing contracts, royalty reports, his wine cellar inventory, estate papers for his parents Alice and Edgar Baird, invitations to Baird's memorial service at Trinity College and assorted photographs. There is also a selection of audio recordings which include cassettes tapes of Baird reading four of his novels, an interview with Baird for Voice of America, and the speakers at his memorial service.
Throughout the collection there are notes written by Michael Mahoney, executor of Baird's estate, that assist in identification of the materials.
Part of the collection was a deposit that converted to a gift upon Baird's death. Other materials were given as gifts by Baird's estate and Michael Mahoney.
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. This sub-series consists of undeveloped ideas, notes and research for projects that include novels, short stories and young adult fiction between 1960 and 1987. The materials include both autograph and typed notes, as well as clippings from various sources that inspired Baird. This sub-series is organized chronologically.

This sub-series consists primarily of manuscripts of Baird's published and unpublished works between 1932 and 1990, including Controlled Substances, the novel Baird was working on at the time of his death. Many of the works also contain notes, writing journals, correspondence between Baird and his publishers and editors, fan mail, and reviews. Within some of the notes files there are clippings of articles and advertisements that inspired Baird, as well as hand-drawn maps that he used to construct fictional settings. The published works found in the collection include Triumphal Entry (1962), The Old Masters (1963), People Who Pull You Down (1970), The Way to the Old Sailors Home (1977), Poor Millie (1978), Villa Aphrodite (1984) and Smart Rats (1990) [young adult]. Some of these works include author's proofs, galley proofs, and folded and gathered sheets. This sub-series is arranged alphabetically by title and then chronologically by date.

This sub-series consists of manuscripts, notes and correspondence related to a series of talks, addresses and lectures that Baird delivered between 1974 and 1987. The topics include backpacking, verisimilitude in fiction, Romanesque art, rats, writing and wine. The majority of the talks, addresses and lectures were given in association with Baird's membership in The Twilight Club in Hartford, Connecticut. Other venues include the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, Friends of the Princeton University Library in Princeton, New Jersey, and Trinity College and The Club, both in Hartford, Connecticut. There is also an undated photograph of Baird and fellow members of The Twilight Club. This sub-series is arranged alphabetically by title.

This sub-series consists of the correspondence Baird received from his family members Alice Baird [mother], Edgar Baird [father] and Sarah Lee Baird [sister] (1947-1948). There are also letters from Alice to Agnes Eckley, Baird's nursemaid and family friend (1941-1942), and letters from Baird to Agnes (1938-1984). These letters document Baird's time at Princeton, his military service and beyond. Lastly, there are a few letters between Baird and Thomas Eckley (1987-1988), son of Agnes and Baird's namesake. Upon the death of his mother, Thomas Eckley returned to Baird both Baird and Alice's letters to Agnes. This sub-series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent.

This sub-series consists of Baird's travel-related correspondence during 1970 to 1979. This correspondence from Wyoming, Canada, Mexico and other locations demonstrates Baird's interest in hiking and other outdoor trips. During his 1979 trip to San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Mexico, Baird examined the culture and researched material for articles and stories. These notes are included with the correspondence. This sub-series is arranged alphabetically by location.

This series consists of the typed and autograph notes kept by Baird, and two bound diaries. The notes include topics such as reading, books, quotations and poetry. There are also assorted clippings in one of the notes files. The diaries document his writing and daily activities for the years 1964 and 1965. This series is arranged by subject (notebook, notes, diaries) and then chronologically by year.

This series consists of the bound, typed and autograph journals kept by Baird. The journals document both the process of writing and Baird's daily activities from 1944 to 1989. There is a large gap between the years 1946 and 1958 for which there are no journals. This series is arranged chronologically by year.

This series consists of assorted cassettes tapes and one record. Some of the cassette tapes are of Baird reading his novels Finding Out (1967), Poor Millie (1978), What Does Goldwatch Say [the earlier title of Walk Out a Brother (1983) (young adult)] and Villa Aphrodite (1984). These recordings were made for his friend, the harpsichordist Ralph Kirkpatrick, after Kirkpatrick became blind. Other cassette tapes include Baird reading Lucy Gayheart (1935) by Willa Cather, [ Rome, Profile of a City, 312-1308 ?] (1980) by Richard Krautheimer, plot ideas for a novel after Villa Aphrodite (1984), biographical information about Baird, an interview with Baird for Voice of America by John Dando, and Baird's memorial service at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. There is also a record, "Animal Crackers" [band and album?], dedicated to Baird by David Thomas Wilentz. Baird gave Wilentz $3,000 with which he produced the album. This series is organized alphabetically by title of the work, and then the remaining items are organized by subject (plot ideas, biographical information, interview, memorial).

This series consists of a backup disk copy of Smart Rats: A Novel (1990) [young adult], directions on printing from the computers at the Austin Arts Center at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, and 10 assorted slides presumably used during Baird's talks, addresses and lectures.
