Overview and metadata sections

Watts, Alaric Alexander, 1797-1864

Alaric A. Watts was a British poet and journalist. Watts wrote for various publications and published a book of poetry, Poetical Sketches, before becoming editor of the Literary Souvenir in 1824. Watts later started the United Service Gazette, which he edited until 1847.

The collection consists of approximately 80 letters to Watts, some of which were received during the period when he was editor of the Literary Souvenir (1824-1838) and the United Service Gazette (1837-1847), from such authors, poets, and editors as William Harrison Ainsworth, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and Thomas Noon Talfourd.

Arranged alphabetically.

This collection was formed as a result of a departmental practice of combining into one collection manuscript material of various accessions relating to a particular author.

Purchased from Ximenes in 1984.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
