Russell A. Fraser (1927-2014) was an author, professor, and biographer of R. P. Blackmur (1904-1965). He was a professor of English at the University of Michigan from 1968 to 1995, and published his biography of Blackmur, A Mingled Yarn: The Life of R. P. Blackmur, in 1981.
The collection consists of Russell A. Fraser's papers concerning his biography of R. P. Blackmur, A Mingled Yarn: The Life of R. P. Blackmur, which was published by Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich in 1981. A significant portion of the collection comprises Fraser's correspondence with friends, family, and associates of Blackmur. Correspondents include Elizabeth Blackmur, Malcolm Cowley, R. D. Darrell, Tessa Horton, Lincoln Kirstein, Robert Penn Warren, John Marshall, Katharine Brown, and Allen Tate. Also present is one letter (1949) by R. P. Blackmur to John Marshall and additional materials collected by Fraser, including a set of page proofs for Blackmur's volume of poetry, From Jordan's Delight (1937), Blackmur's typescript of an essay called "Phoenix in Ashes," and printed copies of published writings by and about Blackmur from the 1920s-1970s.
Arranged by material type.
Correspondence was a gift of Russell A. Fraser in 1983 (AM 83-116). Additional files kept by Fraser when working on his biography of R. P. Blackmur were a later gift of his spouse, Mary Zwiep, in 2018 (AM 2019-47).
