Overview and metadata sections
Samuel Jackson Reid (Princeton Class of 1906) worked with the Brewster Transfer Co. as a wilderness guide and outfitter before serving as a lieutenant in the 306th Field Artillery of the American Expeditionary Forces. He died in France at the end of World War I.
The collection consists of letters written by Reid (Princeton Class of 1906) to his mother, father, brother, and sister from 1901, the year before he entered Princeton, to his death in August, 1918, on a battlefield in France. The letters are familial in nature, discussing his college activities, summer vacation trips, work with the Brewster Transfer Co. in Canada as a wilderness guide and outfitter, military training in New York, and his assignment as lieutenant in the 306th Field Artillery of the American Expeditionary Forces. Also present are a letter by Reid's commander, Capt. Fairman Dick, informing his parents of his death and a letter of condolence by Lt. Douglas Bomeisler.
