Newton

Grace Newton was a missionary with the Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church. Born in 1887, she traveled extensively throughout China as a missionary in Peking and Paotingfu. Newton died in 1915.

The collection consists primarily of letters written by Newton (1887-1915) to her family while she served as a missionary with the Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in Peking and Paotingfu, China. Several of these letters together with a journal include Newton's personal accounts of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. The collection also includes a small selection of speeches and addresses written by Newton, miscellaneous material relating to the Boxer Rebellion, a diary (1910-1911), photographs of Newton and Chinese scenes, Chinese paintings on silk depicting trades, Chinese paper cuttings, pamphlets in Chinese, and assorted memorials and tributes on the occasion of Newton's death in 1915.

The following standard abbreviations, or their variations, are used to identify materials in this collection: ALS = autograph letter signed, TLS = typed letter signed, ANS = autograph note signed, TNS = typed note signed, and AMsS = autograph manuscript signed.

The materials in this collection were a gift of Mrs. Philip Herbert in 1971.
