Murdoch, James Edward, 1811-1893

James Edward Murdoch, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, originally trained as a bookbinder with his father before making his first appearance as an actor in 1829. Murdoch worked as an actor, stage-manager, and lecturer before the outbreak of the Civil War. During the Civil War, Murdoch volunteered as a nurse in Union hospitals in addition to giving dramatic readings to soldiers.

The collection consists of letters by theater people to Murdoch, known for his dramatic readings to soldiers during the Civil War; two notebooks recording biographical material about his life by Edmund H. Russell with the help of Murdoch's daughter, Ida; and the autograph manuscripts of two plays by George Henry Miles, Richelieu and Hernando de Soto.
